Mountain Cats Sweep Fairmont State, 4-1 and 8-0

Drew Westover (Flinton, Pa.) hit a three-run homerun in Pitt-Johnstown's 4-1 victory over Fairmont State (WV) University in Wednesday's first game of a doubleheader at the Point Stadium. The Mountain Cats belted three more homers in the nightcap and got four scoreless innings on the mound from Jon Moore (Leechburg, Pa.) to complete the sweep with an 8-0 win. The Mountain Cats evened their record at 8-8.
In game one, Vince Smarelli's sacrifice fly scored Jeremy Fansler to give the Falcons a 1-0 in the top of the third inning.
However, Pitt-Johnstown answered with four in the bottom of the frame. Zach Martin's (Irwin, Pa.) single to center plated Nick Barbera (Harrisburg, Pa.) to knot the score at three, before Westover connected on a three-run homerun to left center field to give the Mountain Cats a 4-1 lead. Fairmont State managed just two more hits the rest of the way.
Westover went 3-for-3 with a homerun and three RBI, while Barbera added two hits in four at-bats.
Joe Novotny (Johnstown, Pa.) evened his record at 2-2 ofter surrendering one run on two hits in four innings. Matt Whiteman (North Huntingdon, Pa.) tossed two innings and gave up one hit, and Mike McDermott (Nanty-Glo, Pa.) pitched a scoreless seventh inning to pick up his third save of the year.
In game two, Martin, Whiteman and Matt Staub (Latrobe, Pa.) all hit homeruns in the Mountain Cats' 8-0 win.
Martin gave Pitt-Johnstown a 2-0 lead with a long homer over the right field fence in the bottom of the first.
The Mountain Cats added three more runs in the second. Matt McGee (Beech Creek, Pa.) scored on Barbera's sacrifice fly to left, and Martin's single to center drove in Staub and Drew Shaulis (Somerset, Pa.) to increase the lead to 5-0.
Whiteman hit a solo blast to center in the fifth, and Staub's two-run shot over the left field screen in the sixth set the final at 8-0.
Martin was 2-for-4 with a homer and four RBI, and Staub added two hits, including a homerun, and two RBI.
Moore pitched four scoreless innings and scattered four hits to improve to 2-1. Mike Violi (Indiana, Pa.), Alex Naggy (Greensburg, Pa.) and Kody Reighard (Salix, Pa.) each pitched an inning and didn't allow a hit.
With the sweep, Fairmont State fell to 1-16.
Pitt-Johnstown travels to Shepherd (WV) University for a four-game WVIAC series on Saturday and Sunday, before traveling to Shippensburg University for a non-conference doubleheader on Wednesday.
