Mountain Cats Split to Open Series at Shepherd

03/27/2010

Matt Staub (Latrobe, Pa.) had four hits, including a solo homerun, but Shepherd (WV) University used a six-run sixth inning to defeat Pitt-Johnstown, 9-4, in Saturday's WVIAC Northern Division series opener at Fairfax Field in Shepherdstown, WV. In game two, Drew Westover (Flinton, Pa.) belted a two-run homer as the Mountain Cats rallied for four runs in the final two innings inning to earn the split with a 4-3 victory. Pitt-Johnstown is 9-9 overall and 2-4 in the WVIAC North.
Staub's one-out solo homer to right centerfield in the top of the first inning put the Mountain Cats up 1-0.
Shepherd scored two runs in the third inning and one in the fourth to take a 3-1 lead, before Pitt-Johnstown answered with three in the sixth. Zach Martin's (Irwin, Pa.) single up the middle scored Nick Barbera (Harrisburg, Pa.) to cut the deficit to 3-2, and Justin Demek's (Cabot, Pa.) base hit drove home Staub and Martin to give Pitt-Johnstown a 4-3 advantage.
However, the Rams scored six in the bottom of the frame to put the game away.
Staub went 4-for-4 with a homerun and a double, while added two hits.
Kaleb Fleck (Claysburg, Pa.) suffered the loss and fell to 0-2. Fleck was charged with six runs (3 earned) on 11 hits in 5.2 innings of work. Mike McDermott (Nanty-Glo, Pa.) surrendered three earned runs in one-third of an innings in relief of Fleck.
In the nightcap, Shepherd built a 2-0 lead with single runs in the first and third innings. The Mountain Cats tied it in the top of the sixth on Westover's two-run blast to left field. The Rams regained the lead with a run in the bottom of the sixth, but Pitt-Johnstown scored two in the seventh to secure the 4-3 win. Matt Whiteman (North Huntingdon, Pa.) single plated Andy Rubal (Johnstown, Pa.), and Staub scored the eventual game-winner on Tyler Beard's error in left field.
Westover homered and doubled and drove in two to lead the Mountain Cats.
Junior left-hander Drew Shaulis (Somerset, Pa.) gave up three runs and scattered seven hits in a complete-game effort to improve to 3-0. Shaulis also fanned nine and walked just one.
With the split, Shepherd is now 10-10 overall and 3-3 in the WVIAC Northern Division.
Pitt-Johnstown wraps-up its four-game WVIAC series at Shepherd on Sunday, before traveling to Shippensburg University for a non-conference doubleheader on Wednesday. The Mountain Cats will then return home to host a WVIAC series against Wheeling Jesuit (WV) University on Friday and Saturday at the Point Stadium.
