Baseball Takes Two From Alderson-Broaddus

Drew Westover (Flinton, Pa.) and Matt Staub (Latrobe, Pa.) each homered as the Mountain Cats built a 9-2 lead en route to a 11-6 victory over Alderson-Broaddus (WV) College to open a doubleheader, Wednesday afternoon at the Point Stadium. In game two, Justin Demek (Cabot, Pa.) belted a two-run homer to lead Pitt-Johnstown to its fifth straight win in a 6-4 victory. The Mountain Cats are now 19-11.
Alderson-Broaddus jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first with a pair of unearned runs off of Mountain Cat strter Alex Naggy (Greensburg, Pa.). Mark Ruiz reached on an error and scored on a Gary Valdez double, and Matt Paul doubled to right center to drive in Valdez.
Pitt-Johnstown got one back in the bottom of the first on Zach Martin's (Irwin, Pa.) sacrifice fly. Nick Barbera (Harrisburg, Pa.) singled to lead-off and moved to third on Staub's double off the left field screen, before Martin drove home Barbera.
The Mountain Cats took the lead 3-2 with two runs in the third. Barbera singled and eventually scored on an error by Battlers' third baseman Scott Jarvis, and Andy Rubal (Johnstown, Pa.) singled through the left side to drive in Martin, who singled to right.
Pitt-Johnstown broke it open with six runs in the fifth inning. Barbera and Staub scored on a throwing error after Martin's bunt single, and Westover followed with a two-run homerun to left-center to make it 7-2. Rubal then tripled and scored on Dan Mangini's (Lower Burrell, Pa.) double down the left-filed line, and Drew Shaulis (Somerset, Pa.) drove in Mangini with a base hit up the middle.
The Battlers got back in it with four in the sixth, but Staub belted a solo homer to left, and Mangini added an RBI single in the bottom of the frame to set the final at 11-6.
Staub went 3-for-4 with a solo homer, a double and two runs, while Mangini had two hits and two RBI. Barbera, Rubal and Martin also had two hits each.
Naggy got the win and evened his record at 1-1 after giving up six runs (3 earned) on six hits in 5.1 innings-pitched. Naggy also struck out six. Kaleb Fleck (Claysburg, Pa.) tossed a scoreless 1.2 innings and fanned three.

In the nightcap, Pitt-Johnstown completed the sweep with a 6-4 win.
Alderson-Broaddus took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second on Nick Canterberry's RBI triple down the right field line, but Pitt-Johnstown tied in in the bottom of the inning. Shaulis singled to right to scored Demek from second.
Ronnie Whitt connected on a solo homerun to right field in the third to put the Battlers back into the lead.
The Mountain Cats answered with four runs in the bottom of the third to go up 5-2. With two outs, Matt Whiteman (North Huntingdon, Pa.) walked and Westover singled. Rubal hit a two-run triple to right and Demek hammered a two-run homer over the left field screen.
The Battlers got one run back in the fourth, but Seth Roy (Bedford, Pa.) scored on Staub's hit in the bottom of the inning to push the lead back to three at 6-3.
Alderson-Broaddus added one more in sixth and had runners on second and third with one out in the seventh, but Mike McDermott (Nanty-Glo, Pa.) worked out of the jam to earn his fifth save.
Whiteman, Westover and Shaulis all had two hits, and Rubal and Demek had two RBI apiece.
Joe Novotny (Johnstown, Pa.) pitched four innings and surrendered three runs on seven hits to improve to 3-2.
With the sweep, Alderson-Broaddus slipped to 17-9.

The Mountain Cats travel to West Liberty (WV) University for a four-game WVIAC Northern Division series on Saturday and Sunday, before traveling to Clarion University for a doubleheader on Wednesday.
