Baseball Wins Seventh Straight with Sweep at West Liberty

04/10/2010

Drew Shaulis (Somerset, Pa.) tossed a complete-game seven-hitter to lead the Mountain Cats to a 5-1 victory at West Liberty (WV) University to open a four-game WVIAC Northern Division series on Saturday. Pitt-Johnstown completed the sweep and made it seven straight wins by scoring two in the seventh to earn a 6-5 victory. The Mountain Cats are 21-11 overall and 9-5 in conference play.
Pitt-Johnstown scored an unearned run in the third to go up 1-0, before adding three in the fifth. Matt Staub (Latrobe, Pa.) and Zach Martin (Irwin, Pa.) each had RBI singles, and Drew Westover (Flinton, Pa.) followed with an RBI double to force Staub home and increase the lead to 4-0.
That's all Shaulis would need. Shaulis pitched seven innings and allowed just one run on seven hits. He struck out five and walked one.
Westover went 2-for-3 with two doubles and a pair of RBI, while Staub added two hits and two RBI. Mangini collected two hits and scored two runs.
In the nightcap, Pitt-Johnstown erased a 5-4 deficit with two runs in the top of the seventh to secure a 6-5 victory.
The Mountain Cats built a 4-0 lead going into the bottom of the sixth, but West Liberty battled back with five runs to take a 5-4 lead.
However, Pitt-Johnstown answered with two in the seventh. Justin Demek's (Cabot, Pa.) sacrifice fly scored Andy Rubal (Johnstown, Pa.) to tie it at five, before Mangini's single drove in Andy Ebersole (Martinsburg, Pa.) for what turned out to be the game-winning run.
Mangini was 3-for-4 with a double and two RBI, while Seth Roy (Bedford, Pa.) doubled and drove in three for the Mountain Cats.
Staub earned the win to improve to 3-1 after surrendering five runs on six hits in six innings of work. Jon Moore (Leechburg, Pa.) gave up one hit in a scoreless seventh inning to pick-up his third save of the season.
With the sweep, West Liberty slipped to 7-23 overall and 2-8 in the WVIAC Northern Division.
The Mountain Cats wrap-up their four-game WVIAC series at West Liberty (WV) University with a doubleheader on Sunday, before traveling to Clarion University for a doubleheader on Wednesday.
