Mountain Cats Split at West Liberty

Justin Demek (Cabot, Pa.) delivered a two-run double to break a 2-2 tie and highlight a three-run seventh inning to lead the Mountain Cats to a 5-2 victory in Sunday's first game of a WVIAC Northern Division doubleheader at West Liberty (WV) University. The Hilltoppers scored five runs in the fourth in an 8-7 victory to salvage a split in the nightcap. Pitt-Johnstown, which took three out of four in the series, is 22-12 overall and 10-6 in conference play.
In the opener, the Mountain Cats tied it at two in the sixth on Seth Roy's (Bedford, Pa.) two-out single that drove in Dan Mangini (Lower Burrell, Pa.), before Pitt-Johnstown added three in the seventh to secure a 5-2 victory.
Matt Staub (Latrobe, Pa.) walked and Zach Martin (Irwin, Pa.) singled to start the sevnth inning. After a Drew Westover (Flinton, Pa.) fly out, Demek doubled to drive in Staub and Martin to make it 4-2. Demek then advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored a an error to set the final at 5-2.
Demek went 1-for-3 with a double and two RBI, while Staub doubled and scored two runs. Westover and Mangini also had an RBI each for Pitt-Johnstown.
Kaleb Fleck (Claysburg, Pa.) pitched six strong innings to even his record at 2-2. Fleck gave up just two runs (1 earned) on five hits. He struck out four and walked three. Jon Moore (Leechburg, Pa.) gave up a hit and walked one in a scoreless seventh inning to earn his fourth save of the year.
In game two, Pitt-Johnstown held a slim 3-2 lead going into the bottom of the fourth, but West Liberty battled back with five in the bottom of the inning and held on for an 8-7 win.
The Mountain Cats cut it to 7-6 in with three runs in the fifth. Roy drove in Mangini and Drew Sahulis (Somerset, Pa.) with a base hit, and Nick Barbera (Harrisburg, Pa.) singled-home Roy.
The Hilltoppers tacked on one more in the sixth, and Pitt-Johnstown got it back in the seventh, but it wasn't enough.
Barbera went 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run. Demek and Mangini had two hits apiece, and Matt Whiteman (North Huntingdon, Pa.) and Roy each had two RBI.
Kody Reighard (Salix, Pa.) dropped to 2-3 after giving up five runs on six hits in 3.2 innings.
With the split, West Liberty is now 8-24 overall and 3-9 in the WVIAC Northern Division.
The Mountain Cats travel to Clarion University for a doubleheader on Wednesday, before going to Alderson-Broaddus (WV) College to play doubleheaders against the Battlers on Friday and Bluefield State (WV) College on Saturday.
