Mountain Cats Split Twinbill at Clarion

Andy Rubal (Johnstown, Pa.) banged out four hits and drove in three runs to lead to Mountain Cats to an 8-0 win in Wedneday's doubleheader opener at Clarion University. In the nightcap, the Golden Eagles held Pitt-Johnstown to just four hits in a 4-1 loss. The Mountain Cats, ranked No. 8 in this week's NCAA Atlantic Region Poll, are now 23-13.
In game one, Rubal went 4-for-4 with a double and three RBI, while Zach Martin (Irwin, Pa.) collected two hits, including a double, and two RBI in the 8-0 victory. Drew Westover (Flinton, Pa.) added two hits and drove in two.
Matt Whiteman (North Huntingdon, Pa.) pitched five shutout innings and allowed just one hit to improve to 3-1. Whiteman also struck out four and walked one.
In game two, Nick Barbera (Harrisburg, Pa.), Andy Ebersole (Martinsburg, Pa.), Martin and Westover accounted for Pitt-Johnstown's four hits. Martin drove in the Mountain Cats' lone run.
Joe Novotny (Johnstown, Pa.) suffered the loss and fell to 3-3 after giving up two runs on seven hits in three innings of work.
The Mountain Cats travel to Alderson-Broaddus (WV) College to play doubleheaders against the Battlers on Friday and Bluefield State (WV) College on Saturday.
