Mountain Cats Sweep Bluefield State 12-4, 12-2

Drew Westover (Flinton, Pa.) belted a pair of homeruns as the Mountain Cats collected 12 hits in a 12-4 victory over Bluefield State (WV) College to open a doubleheader Saturday afternoon at the Point Stadium.  The Mountain Cats got four hits from Andy Rubal (Johnstown, Pa.) and another homerun from Westover in a 16-hit attack to complete the sweep with a 12-2 win in the nightcap.  Pitt-Johnstown improved to 25-14.
     Bluefield State jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first on Colin Elswick's two-run homerun to left center field, but Pitt-Johnstown answered with seven in the bottom of the inning, highlighted by Zach Martin's (Irwin, Pa.) two RBI double off the top of the left field screen andWestover's long three-run homer to left.
     The Mountain Cats made it 10-2 with three-runs in the third.  Nick Barbera (Harrisburg, Pa.) singled homeWestover, and Rubal tripled to right field to drive in Drew Shaulis (Somerset, Pa.) and Barbera.
     Elswick's sacrifice fly in the fifth scored Taylor Castrillo and cut the deficit to 10-3, but Pitt-Johnstown got two in the bottom of the inning.  Westover led off with his second homer of the day, and Shaulis scored onBarbera's fielder's choice to shortstop.
     The Big Blues scored a run in the seventh to set the final at 12-4.
     Barbera went 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBI, while Shaulis added three hits and three runs for the Mountain Cats.  Westover hit a pair of homeruns and drove in four, and Rubal and Martin each had two RBI.
     Matt Staub (Latrobe, Pa.) earned the win and improved to 4-1 after allowing three runs on five hits in six innings.  Staub struck out four and didn't allow a walk.  Mike McDermott (Nanty-Glo, Pa.) pitched the seventh inning and gave up one unearned run.
     In game two, Matt Whiteman's (North Huntingdon, Pa.) two-out single to right field scored Rubal andStaub to put Pitt-Johnstown up 2-0 after one inning, before the Mountain Cats added a pair of unearned runs in the second.
     Bluefield State got a run back on a throwing error in the third inning and one in the fifth on Castrillo's RBI single to center to make it 4-2.
     However, Pitt-Johnstown broke things open with seven runs in the bottom of the fifth to build the lead to 11-2.  Westover hit his third homerun of the day, a two-run blast over the light tower in left center field, andJeff Campbell (Brackenridge, Pa.) drove in two with a double.  Seth Roy (Bedford, Pa.)Rubal and Staubalso had an RBI each.
     The Mountain Cats tacked on another run in the sixth en route to the 12-2 win.
     Rubal went 4-for-4 with a triple an RBI and two runs, and Roy banged out three hits, drove in one and scored twice.  Westover added two hits, including his third homer of the day, and Staub had two hits and an RBI.
     Shaulis pitched six strong innings to improve to 6-1.  Shaulis surrendered two runs (1 earned) on six hits, while fanning five and walking just one.
     With the sweep, the Big Blues dropped to 11-28.
     The Mountain Cats travel to West Virginia State University on Sunday and to Davis & Elkins (WV) College next Saturday, before returning home to host the Senators and celebrate Senior Day on May 2 at 1 p.m. at the Point Stadium.
