Baseball Sweeps Bluefield State at Point Stadium

Matt Staub (Latrobe, Pa.) had three hits and three RBI to lead the Mountain Cat baseball team to an 11-1 victory over Bluefield State (WV) College in Wednesday's doubleheader opener at the Point Stadium. Pitt-Johnstown completed the sweep and improved to 19-5 with a 7-3 win in the nightcap behind a pair of hits and three RBI from Josh Campanella (Allison Park, Pa.).
In game one, Staub's bases loaded triple to the gap in right field broke open a 2-1 game and highlighted a four-run Mountain Cat fourth inning. Pitt-Johnstown added two more runs in the fifth inning and three in the sixth to set the final a 11-1.
Staub finished 3-for-4 with a double, a triple and three RBI. Nick Barbera (Harrisburg, Pa.) had three doubles and scored three runs, and Matt Hanley (Delmont, Pa.) drove in three. Dan Mangini (Lower Burrell, Pa.) was 2-for-4 with an RBI, while Korey Luciow (York, Pa.), Drew Westover (Flinton, Pa.) and Andy Rubal (Johnstown, Pa.) each drove in a run. Junior left-hander Tyler Zaremski (Bethel Park, Pa.) got the start on the mound and gave up just one run on four hits in four innings of work to improve to 2-0. Alex Naggy (Greensburg, Pa.), Josh Farabaugh (Altoona, Pa.) and Kody Reighard (Salix, Pa.) pitched an inning each and didn't allow a hit.
In game two, Pitt-Johnstown opened-up a 5-0 lead after three innings, before Bluefield State added three runs in the top of the fourth. However, the Mountain Cats answered with two more runs in the bottom of the frame en route to the 7-3 win.
Campanella was 2-for-2 with a double and three RBI. Staub collected two more doubles and scored two runs, while Westover went 2-for-3 with two RBI. Drew Shaulis (Somerset, Pa.) raised his record to 2-0 after surrendering three runs on four hits in four innings. Shaulis also struck out three.
With the losses, Bluefield State dropped to 8-12 on the year.
The Mountain Cats will host a four-game WVIAC series against Shepherd (WV) University on Saturday and Sunday at 1 p.m. at the Point Stadium.
