03/28/2009

Shepherd (WV) University climbed out to first-inning leads on its way to a pair of 3-1 conference victories over the Mountain Cats Saturday afternoon at the Point Stadium. Pitt-Johnstown, 20-8 overall and 3-5 in the WVIAC Northern Division, got four hits and an RBI from Justin Demek (Cabot, Pa.) in the doubleheader.
In the opener, Shepherd scored a pair of runs in the top of the first inning, before the Mountain Cats answered with a run of their own in the bottom of the third. Nick Barbera (Harrisburg, Pa.) singled to start the inning and scored on Matt Staub's (Latrobe, Pa.) double to the gap in left-center. The Rams added an insurance run in the fifth inning to set the final at 3-1.
Demek went 2-for-3 with a double. Barbera, Staub, Josh Campanella (Allison Park, Pa.), Andy Rubal (Johnstown, Pa.) and Ryan Stough (Dover, Pa.) also had hits for Pitt-Johnstown.
Staub got the start on the mound and took the loss and dropped to 2-2 after giving up three earned runs on six hits in 5.2 innings of work. Staub also walked one and struck out six. Bryan Collins earned the win for Shepherd after tossing six innings. Collins fanned five and walked one to raise his record to 1-0. Kenny Reisinger picked-up his third save after stranding two Mountain Cat runners in the seventh inning.
In the nightcap, the Rams scored three first inning runs and made them hold up in the 3-1 win. The Mountain Cats notched their lone run in the second inning. Campanella reached on a fielder's choice, and Demek drove him home with a double to the fence in right-center.
Demek and Rubal both finished with two hits in three at-bats for the Mountain Cats.
Pitt-Johnstown starter Jon Moore (Leechburg, Pa.) settled down after giving up the three first inning runs, but suffered the loss and fell to 0-2. Moore surrendered eight hits, walked two and fanned three in 5.1 innings. Eric Faint (Johnstown, Pa.) pitched the final 1.2 innings and limited the Rams to just one hit, while striking out two.
Bryan Wolfe improved to 1-4 for Shepherd, now 15-11 overall and 5-1 in league play. Wolfe gave up just one run on six hits in 4.2 innings. Reisinger worked the final 2.1 innings and held Pitt-Johnstown to one hit to collect his fourth save of the year and second of the day.
