Mountain Cats Drop Two at WV State

04/02/2009

After sweeping a pair of games from West Virginia State University to open the season at the Point Stadium, the Mountain Cats made the return trip to Institute, WV on Thursday and dropped a doubleheader, 2-1 in 11 innings and 8-2. Pitt-Johnstown, 20-10 on the year, got two hits from Josh Campanella (Allison Park, Pa.) in the opener and three hits from Drew Westover (Flinton, Pa.) in the nightcap.
In game one, Andy Rubal's (Johnstown, Pa.) RBI in the top of the fourth inning tied the score 1-1. However, the Yellow Jackets got a one-out double from Bo Darby in the bottom of the 11th inning, before Evan Kendall's single to right field plated Darby with the game-winning run.
Campanella finished 2-for-4, while Nick Barbera (Harrisburg, Pa.) added two hits for Pitt-Johnstown. Tyler Zaremski (Bethel Park, Pa.) took the loss and fell to 2-1 for the Mountain Cats after giving up Darby's run in the 11th inning. Freshman left-hander Kody Reighard (Salix, Pa.) got the start and surrendered one run on three hits in four innings.
In game two, West Virginia State scored three runs in both the third and fourth innings to erase a 1-0 deficit to complete the sweep with the 8-2 win.
Westover was 3-for-3 with an RBI. Matt Staub (Latrobe, Pa.) and Scott Brown (Lewistown, Pa.) each doubled, and Dan Mangini (Lower Burrell, Pa.) drove in a run for Pitt-Johnstown.
Ben Doak (Blairsville, Pa.) gave up three earned runs in the third inning and took the loss to fall to 0-1.
With the sweep, the Yellow Jackets improved to 10-9.
The Mountain Cats host a WVIAC doubleheader against Wheeling Jesuit (WV) University on Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Point Stadium, before traveling to Wheeling Jesuit on Sunday.
