Baseball Team Sweeps Fairmont State in 2006 Home Opener

Senior catcher Josh Mearkle (Everett, Pa.) and sophomore second baseman Dan Delsignore (Johnstown, Pa.) hit solo homeruns in the bottom of the seventh inning to force extra innings, before the Mountain Cats scored a run in the bottom of the eighth inning to defeat Fairmont State (WV) University, 7-6, in Sunday's first game of of a doubleheader at George R. Walter Field. Pitt Johnstown completed the 2006 home opening sweep with a 2-0 win in game two to improve to 18-8 on the year.
The Mountain Cats rallied from a 6-2 deficit in the sixth inning to force extra innings. After holding Fairmont State scoreless in the top of the eight inning, senior first baseman Casey Long (Johnstown, Pa.) double in the bottom on the inning. Following a one out intentional walk, junior designated hitter Bill Colosimo (Summerhill, Pa.) singled to centerfield to score pinch-runner Brian Strenko (Ebensburg, Pa.) to give Pitt Johnstown the 7-6 win. Long finished 4-for-5 with three doubles and an RBI, while Delsignore added two hits, including his game-tying fifth homerun of the season, and two RBI's. Mountain Cat freshman right hander Garrett Pampiks (Gibsonia, Pa.) improved to 2-1 after pitching 3.1 innings of hitless baseball in relief of senior Brian Chruscial (Irwin, Pa.). Pampiks also struckout four and walked none.
In the nightcap, sophomore right hander David Huey (Glen Campbell, Pa.) struckout eight and walked one in a six-hit complete-game effort. Huey is now 4-0 on the season. The Mountain Cats jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Long doubled home sophomore shortstop Chris Turka (Natrona Heights, Pa.). The Mountain Cats added another run to set the final score at 2-0 when Turka scored on freshman outfielder Matt Hanley's sacrifice fly to centerfield. Turka had two of Pitt Johnstown's seven hits and scored both Mountain Cat runs.
With the losses, Fairmont State fell to 12-23 on the season.
The Mountain Cats travel to Wheeling Jesuit (WV) University on Tuesday, Clarion University on Thursday and Alderson-Broaddus (WV) College on Saturday, before returning home to host a doubleheader against Alderson-Broaddus on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. at George R. Walter Field.
