Baseball Splits WVIAC Games at Wheeling Jesuit

04/05/2009

After taking a pair of games from Wheeling Jesuit (WV) University at the Point Stadium on Saturday, the Mountain Cat baseball team traveled to Wheeling, WV on Sunday and came away with a WVIAC Northern Division doubleheader split. Pitt-Johnstown, 23-11 overall and 6-6 in conference play, suffered a 6-3 loss in game one, but rebounded with a 7-2 victory in game two behind five strong innings from Jon Moore (Leechburg, Pa.).
In the opener, Matt Hanley (Delmont, Pa.) and Nick Barbera (Harisburg, Pa.) each belted solo homeruns but the Mountain Cats weren't able to keep the bats going and suffered the 6-3 loss. Matt Staub (Latrobe, Pa.) took the loss after surrendering three earned runs on six hits in 2.1 innings. Staub, who walked one and fanned one, fell to 2-3 on the year.
In the nightcap, Ben Watkins (Johnstown, Pa.) went 2-for-4 with a two-run homer to lead Pitt-Johnstown to the 7-2 win. Josh Campanella (Allison Park, Pa.) had three hits, including a double and two RBI, while Barbera and Drew Westover (Flinton, Pa.) had two hits apiece. Moore got the win and improved to 1-2 after giving up two runs on seven hits in five innings-pitched. Moore also walked two and struck out four.
With the split, Wheeling Jesuit improved to 4-23 overall and 1-7 in the WVIAC North.
The Mountain Cats will host a non-conference doubleheader against Shippensburg University on Tuesday, before hosting a four-game WVIAC series against West Liberty State (WV) College on Friday and Saturday. All three doubleheaders are scheduled to start at 1 p.m. at the Point Stadium.
