Mountain Cats Drop Two at Home To Alderson-Broaddus

After a week off due to the weather, Head Coach Todd Williams and the Mountain Cat baseball team was back in action at home on Sunday. However, visiting Alderson-Broaddus (WV) College dealt Pitt Johnstown a 6-3 loss in the opener and a 3-2 loss in nine innings to complete the sweep. The Mountain Cats are now 18-10.
In game one, Alderson-Broaddus built a 6-0 lead, before the Mountain Cats scored single runs in each of the last three innings to set the final at 6-3. Sophomore shortstop Chris Turka (Natrona Heights, Pa.) went 3-for-4 with a run scored, while outfielders Adam Plummer (Bellwood, Pa.) and Matt Hanley (Delmont, Pa.) and catcher Josh Mearkle (Everett, Pa.) each collected two hits. Casey Long (Johnstown, Pa.), Cody Gallaher (Sidman, Pa.) and Mearkle all had an RBI. Senior right hander Brian Chruscial (Irwin, Pa.) fell to 2-2 after surrendering six runs on eight hits in 3.2 innings of work.
In the nightcap, Alderson-Broaddus tied the score with a run in the top of the seventh inning, before adding the game-winner in the top of the ninth to earn a 3-2 victory. Long and Hanley had two hits apiece, while junior designated hitter Bill Colosimo (Summerhill, Pa.) was 1-for-3 with both Mountain Cat RBI's. Sophomore right hander Zach Toth (Sarver, Pa.) suffered the loss and fell to 4-1 after giving up two earned runs and four hits in three innings of relief of David Huey (Glen Campbell, Pa.). Huey struckout four, walked one and gave up just one run on four hits in six innings.
With the sweep, the Battlers improved to 14-9 on the year.
The Mountain Cats host doubleheaders against Wheeeling Jesuit (WV) University on Tuesday, Clarion University on Wednesday, Slippery Rock University on Thursday and Concord (WV) University on Friday. All four doubleheaders will start at 1:00 p.m. at George R. Walter Field.
