Baseball Splits at Home With Wheeling Jesuit;

04/11/2006

Head Coach Todd Williams moved to within two victories of the 200-win plateau as the Mountain Cat baseball team earned a doubleheader split with Wheeling Jesuit (WV) University on Tuesday at George R. Walter Field. After dropping game one, 7-3, Pitt Johnstown junior left hander Adam Plummer (Bellwood, Pa.) gave up three runs and scattered just four hits to help the Mountain Cats pick-up a 7-3 win in the nightcap. Pitt Johnstown is now 19-11.
In Tuesday's opener, Wheeling Jesuit scored single runs in the third and fourth innings, before adding two more in the sixth inning. The Mountain Cats, who were held without a hit through 5.1 innings, battled back with three of their own runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. However, the Cardinals scored three unearned runs in the seventh inning to win 7-3. Junior outfielder Cody Gallaher (Sidman, Pa.) broke-up the no-hit bid with a single up the middle with one out in the sixth inning to start the three-run ralley. Pitt Johnstown finished with five hits, including a two-run single by Plummer. Freshman left hander Bill Wasko (Bethel Park, Pa.) suffered the loss and fell to 0-2. Wasko surrendered just two earned runs on 10 hits, while striking out three and walking two.
In game two, junior catcher Paul Pentz (Johnstown, Pa.) went 2-for-3 with a two run homerun, and senior first baseman Casey Long (Johnstown, Pa.) belted his 12th homer of the season. Sophomore shortstop Chris Turka (Natrona Heights, Pa.), freshman outfielder Matt Hanley (Delmont, Pa.) and Plummer also drove in runs for Pitt Johnstown. On the mound, Plummer gave up one earned run and struckout eight in a complete-game effort to even his record at 2-2.
The Mountain Cats host doubleheaders against Clarion University on Wednesday, Slippery Rock University on Thursday and Concord (WV) University on Friday. All three doubleheaders will start at 1:00 p.m. at George R. Walter Field.
