Casey Long Ties School Homerun Record in Home Split With Clarion;

04/12/2006

With one swing of the bat, senior first baseman Casey Long (Johnstown, Pa.) tied the Pitt Johnstown record for homeruns in a season and a career on his way to helping the Mountain Cats earn a home split with visiting Clarion University on Wednesday. Pitt Johnstown dropped game one, 12-4, but rebounded with a 9-2 victory in game two to move Head Coach Todd Williams to within one win of the 200-career-victory mark. The Mountain Cats are now 20-12.
The Mountain Cats trailed 9-0 through four innings before suffering the 12-4 loss in the opener. Freshman right hander Aarol Elliott (Genesee, Pa.) gave up nine runs (5 earned runs) and 10 hits in just four innings to fall to 2-1 on the season. Junior designated hitter Bill Colosimo (Summerhill, Pa.) hit a two run homerun, while Adam Plummer (Bellwood, Pa.), Paul Pentz (Johnstown, Pa.), Cody Gallaher (Sidman, Pa.) and Long each collected two hits.
In the nightcap, sophomore shortstop Chris Turka (Natrona Heights, Pa.) led off the bottom of the first inning with a solo homerun, and Long followed with a two-run homer just two batters later to get Pitt Johnstown out to a 7-0 lead after one inning in game two. Long's homerun tied Rick Baxter's (2000-04) school record for homeruns in a season with 13 and homeruns in a career with 35. Long finished 3-for-4 with a pair of RBI's, while Turka also added a pair of runs batted-in. Junior second baseman Cody Gallaher (Sidman, Pa.) chipped in two hits to help lead a 13-hit Mountain Cat attack. Junior right hander Zach Stere (Bellwood, Pa.) picked up his first win after giving up just two runs in 5.1 innings of work. Stere, who held Clarion hitless through five innings, surrended four hits and struckout four Golden Eagle hitters.
With the split, Clarion is now 10-20 on the season.
The Mountain Cats host doubleheaders against Slippery Rock University on Thursday and Concord (WV) University on Friday. Both doubleheaders will start at 1:00 p.m. at George R. Walter Field.
