Baseball Splits Another Doubleheader at Concord

02/16/2008

Junior first baseman Matt Hanley (Delmont, Pa.) belted a three-run homerun and David Huey (Glen Campbell, Pa.) gave up one run in four innings to lead the Mountain Cats to a 5-1 win in Saturday's first game of a doubleheader at Concord (WV) University. However, Concord earned a 3-1 win in game two to split the doubleheader and the four-game-series.
In Saturday's opener, Pitt Johnstown jumped out to a 2-0 first inning lead on Adam Plummer's (Bellwood, Pa.) two-run single, before Hanley hit his first homerun of the season, a three-run blast in the third inning to put the Mountain Cats up, 5-1. That's all Huey would need to collect the win. Huey tossed four innings and gave up just one run on three hits. He also struckout four and walked one. Freshman Jon Moore (Leechburg, Pa.) pitched three scoreless innings to get his first collegiate save. Plummer and Hanley each had two hits, while Matt Petrowsky (Johnstown, Pa.) went 1-for-2 with two runs scored.
In the nightcap, Concord climbed out to a 2-0 lead with single runs in the second and third innings off of Mountain Cat starter Kaleb Fleck (Claysburg, Pa.), before adding another run in the fifth inning to secure the 3-1 win. Fleck took the loss after giving up two runs on five hits in three innings. Freshman Nick Barbera (Harrisburg, Pa.) pitched the final three innings and surrendered one run on two hits. Freshman first baseman Erik Tuomisto (Northumberland, Pa.) had two hits, including a double, and Pitt Johnstown's lone RBI, while Andy Rubal (Johnstown, Pa.) had a double and senior shortstop Chris Turka (Natrona Heights, Pa.) added a triple in the loss.
With the split, Concord and Pitt Johnstown are both 2-2.
The Mountain Cats travel to Ohio Valley (WV) University for a four-game series on February 29 and March 1.
