Head Coach Todd Williams' Mountain Cat baseball team opened the 2008 Spring Trip in Fort Pierce, FL with a pair of losses to Post (CT) University on Sunday. Pitt Johnstown squandered leads in both games and suffered a 6-4 loss in game one and a 5-4 loss in eight innings in game two. The Mountain Cats are now 4-4.
In Sunday's opener, senior shortstop Chris Turka (Natrona Heights, Pa.) went 2-for-4 with a triple and all four Pitt Johnstown RBI, but the Mountain Cats were not able to hold a 4-1 lead in the sixth inning and fell 6-4. Starter Mike Jewart (Natrona Heights, Pa.) struckout three and gave up just two runs on four hits in five innings-pitched. However, Post jumped on sophomore lefthander Tyler Zaremski (Bethel Park, Pa.) for three runs and four hits in the sixth inning. Zaremski took the loss and fell to 0-1.
In game two, Pitt Johnstown took a 4-3 lead in the top of the eighth inning, but Post responded with two runs off of freshman Nick Barbera (Harrisburg, Pa.) to earn the 5-4 win and secure the sweep. Dan Mangini (Lower Burrell, Pa.) drove in Erik Tuomisto (Northumberland, Pa.) to give the Mountain Cats a 4-3 lead in the eighth inning. Mangini finished 2-for-4 with an RBI, while Matt Petrowsky (Johnstown, Pa.) and Tuomisto each had two hits. Freshman Jon Moore (Leechburg, Pa.) started and gave up three runs in 2.3 innings, before giving way to Bill Wasko (Bethel Park, Pa.), who held Post scoreless for 3.1 innings. Barbera suffered the loss and slipped to 0-1.
With the sweep, Post improved to 3-6.
