Mountain Cats Split Doubleheader at Fairmont State

After a 10-day lay-off due to the weather, Head Coach Todd Williams' Mountain Cat baseball team was back in action on Sunday and came away with a split at Fairmont State (WV) University. Pitt Johnstown dropped game one, 12-4, but rebounded for a 6-4 win in game two. The Mountain Cats are now 6-10.
In the opener, Fairmont State broke open a 5-4 game with seven runs in the sixth inning to take the 12-4 win. Senior catcher Paul Pentz (Johnstown, Pa.) had two hits in three at-bats, and freshman Dan Mangini (Lower Burrell, Pa.) drove in two runs. Senior right hander Zach Stere (Bellwood, Pa.) suffered the loss and fell to 1-2 on the year.
The Mountain Cats bounced back for a 6-4 win in the nightcap. Sophomore outfielder Matt Hanley (Delmont, Pa.) collected two hits, including a two-run homerun, while junior shortstop Chris Turka (Natrona Heights, Pa.) added a pair of doubles in three at-bats. Senior first baseman Bill Colosimo (Summerhill, Pa.) and Pentz each had two hits in the win. Sophomore right hander Chuck Boring (Dilltown, Pa.) improved to 1-1 after striking out five Fairmont State hitters in 5.2 innings of work.
With the split, Fairmont State is now 5-13 on the season.
The Mountain Cats are scheduled to make their 2007 home bebut on Wednesday with a doubleheader against West Liberty State (WV) College at 1:00 p.m. at George R. Walter Field. Pitt Johnstown will then travel to Alderson-Broaddus (WV) College on Thursday.
