Mountain Cats Fall, 13-1, in First Round Of Regional Tournament to West Virginia State

Head Coach Todd Williams' sixth-seeded Mountain Cat baseball team suffered a 13-1 loss to top-seeded West Virginia State University in the first round of the 2006 NCAA Division II North Athantic Regional Tournament in Institute, WV on Thursday. The Mountain Cats will take on #5-seeded Ohio Valley (WV) University in an elimination game on Friday at 9:00 a.m.
The Yellow Jackets jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning on Ryan Taylor's two-run homerun to right center field and never looked back. West Virginia State added two more runs in the second inning and three in the hird inning on Eric Workman's three-run homer to left field. Following single runs in the fourth and fifth innings, the Yellow Jackets scored four more runs in the bottom of the seventh inning, highlighted by Workman's second homerun of the game. The Mountain Cats scored thieir lone run when sophomore shortstop Chris Turka's (Natrona Heights, Pa.) sacrifice fly scored Cody Gallaher (Sidman, Pa.) in the top of the third inning.
Junior center fielder Adam Plummer (Bellwood, Pa.) and Gallaher each collected two hits for Pitt Johnstown.
Mountain Cat sophomore right hander David Huey (Glen Campbell, Pa.) suffered his first loss of the season and fell to 8-1. Huey surrendered seven earned runs on 10 hits in three innings of work. Senior Brian Chruscial(Irwin, Pa.) and freshman Garrett Pampiks (Gibsonia, Pa.) eached tossed one scoreless inning of relief.
Pitt Johnstown is now 33-17 on the season.
