Baseball Sweeps West Liberty State in Home Opener

Head Coach Todd Williams and the Mountain Cat baseball team opened the 2007 home schedule with sweep over West Liberty State (WV) College Wednesday afternoon at George R. Walter Field. Pitt Johnstown took game one, 10-5, and earned the sweep with a 4-3 win in the nightcap on freshman third baseman Josh Campanella's (Allison Park, Pa.) walk-off RBI double in the eighth inning. The Mountain Cats have won three straight game and are now 8-10.
In game one, junior shortstop Chris Turka (Natrona Heights, Pa.) went 2-for-3 with three RBI, while junior second baseman Dan Delsignore (Johnstown, Pa.) and Campanella collected two hits. Sophomore outfielder Josh Farabaugh (Altoona, Pa.) belted a solo homerun and Matt Hanley (Delmont, Pa.) drove in a pair of runs. Junior right hander David Huey (Glen Campbell, Pa.) evened his record at 1-1 after giving up one run on seven hits in five innings of work. Huey also struckout three and walked none.
In the nightcap, Campanella's two-out walk-off double to right center field scored Brad Dale (Windber, Pa.) to give the Mountain Cats the 4-3 win. Campanella finished the game 4-for-4 with three doubles and two RBI, while senior first baseman Bill Colosimo (Summerhill, Pa.) added two hits. Delsignore and Turka each drove in a run for Pitt Johnstown. Freshman Andrew deBethune (St. Albans, ME) earned his first collegiate win after pitching three scoreless innings in relief of starter Billy Wasko (Bethel Park, Pa.). deBethune surrendered three hits. Wasko pitched five innings and gave up three runs on seven hits.
With the sweep, West Liberty State dropped to 4-13 on the season.
The Mountain Cats host a doubleheader against Alderson-Broaddus (WV) College on Thursday at 1:00 p.m., before hosting a four-game WVIAC conference series against Ohio Valley (WV) University on Saturday and Sunday.
