Baseball Rallies to Earn Sweep Over West Virginia Wesleyan

04/19/2006

After winning game one over West Vrirginia Wesleyan College, 5-1, Head Coach Todd Williams' Mountain Cat baseball team erased a 3-1 deficit with three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning of game two to win 4-3 and earn the sweep Wednesday afternoon at George R. Walter Field. Pitt Johnstown is now 26-14.
In Wednesday's opener, Casey Long (Johnstown, Pa.) finished 2-for 3, including his 16th homerun of the season. Long also drove in two and scored two runs, while freshman outfielder Matt Hanley (Delmont, Pa.) added a pair of hits. Freshman first baseman Tyler Good (Philipsburg, Pa.) singled and drove in two runs. Sophomore right hander David Huey (Glen Campbell, Pa.) tossed his third complete-game of the year and improved to 6-0 after giving up just one run on seven hits.
In the nightcap, Good's pinch-hit single to center in the bottom of the seventh inning scored Jeff Rolla (Sidman, Pa.) to tie the score, before freshman third baseman Justin Horrell's (Ligonier, Pa.) infield single plated Paul Pentz (Johnstown, Pa.) with the game winning run. The Mountain Cats were held to just five hits, but junior right hander Zach Stere (Bellwood, Pa.) kept Pitt Johnstown in the game. Stere also pitched a complete-game to raise his record to 2-0. Stere surrendered three runs (two earned runs), on six hits, while striking out two and walking one.
With the sweep, West Virginia Wesleyan fell to 16-20.
The Mountain Cats travel to Slippery Rock University on Thursday, before hosting a four-game series against Bluefield State (WV) College on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. and Sunday at noon. This weekend will also mark Senior Weekend for the Mountain Cats.
