Mountain Cats Earn Split With Mansfield on Spring Trip

After a sluggish start and an 8-0 loss in Tuesday's opener, the Mountain Cats scored 12 runs in a 12-8 win over Mansfield University to earn a doubleheader split in Fort Pierce, FL. Head Coach Todd Williams' team, ranked #7 in this week's NCBWA North Atlantic Region Poll, is now 5-7.
In game one, Pitt Johnstown managed just four hits in the 8-0 loss. Josh Campanella (Allison Park, Pa.), Dan Delsignore (Johnstown, Pa.), Matt Hanley (Delmont, Pa.) and Adam Plummer (Bellefonte, Pa.) accounted for the Mountain Cats' hits. Senior right hander David Huey (Glen Campbell, Pa.) suffered the loss and slipped to 2-1 after giving up four runs on eight hits in six innings of work.
In the nightcap, the Mountain Cats exploded for 12 runs and held on for a 12-8 win. Andy Rubal (Johnstown, Pa.) and Ron Stenger (Johnstown, Pa.) each with 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI, while sophomore catcher Justin Demek (Cabot, Pa.) chipped in two hits and drove in two runs. Erik Tuomisto (Northumberland, Pa.), Campanella and Hanley all had two hits and an RBI. Drew Shawlis (Somerset, Pa.) also collected two hits. Freshman right hander Kaleb Fleck (Claysburg, Pa.) tossed five innings and gave up four runs on six hits to improve to 1-1.
With the split, Mansfield is now 5-3 on the season.
The Mountain Cats wrap-up their Spring Trip in Fort Pierce, FL with a doubleheaders against Slippery Rock University on Wednesday, before traveling to Bluefield State (WV) College for doubleheaders on Saturday and Sunday.
