Baseball Opens Home Slate With Sweep Over Alderson-Broaddus

Matt Hanley's (Delmont, Pa.) RBI single up the middle in the bottom of the ninth inning gave Pitt Johnstown a 3-2 win in the 2008 home opener over Alderson-Broaddus (WV) College Friday afternoon at Johnstown's Point Stadium. The Mountain Cats, wo will wrap up the four-game series against the Battlers on Saturday, completed the sweep with an 8-4 win in game two. Pitt Johnstown is now 10-9.
In game one, Pitt Johnstown rallied for a run in the bottom of the seventh inning to tie the score and force extra innings, before Hanley's line drive single to center field scored Dan Delsignore (Johnstown, Pa.) in the bottom of the ninth inning to give the Mountain Cats a 3-2 win. Matt Petrowsky's (Johnstown, Pa.) two-out double into the the left field gap plated Delsignore to tie the score. Petrowsky finished 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI, while Josh Campanella (Allison Park, Pa.) and Delsignore each hat two hits. Senior outfielder Adam Plummer (Bellwood, Pa.) belted a solo homerun over the 395 sign in right field to get Pitt Johnstown on the scoreboard in the in sixth inning. Freshman Jon Moore (Leechburg, Pa.) improved to 2-0 after getting the final out in the top of the ninth inning. Mountain Cat starter Chuck Boring (Dilltown, Pa.) got a no-decision. Boring surrendered just one run on three hits in five innings of work. Boring also struckout nine Battlers.
In the nightcap, Pitt Johnstown broke open a 3-3 game with five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to secure the 8-4 win. The Mountain Cats erased a 1-0 first inning deficit and took a 2-1 lead on Campanella's two-run inside-the-park homerun in the bottom of the frame. The Battlers added single runs in the four and fifth innings to take a 3-2 lead, until Hanley tied it with a solo homer to left cernter field in the bottom of the fifth. Pitt Johnstown then exploded for five runs in the sixth inning to secure the sweep. Hanley went 2-for-3 with a homerun and two RBI, while Delsignore had two hits and Dan Mangini (Lower Burrell, Pa.) drove in a pair of runs. Junior right hander Mike Jewart (Natrona Heights, Pa.) picked up his first win of the season in relief of David Huey (Glen Campbell, Pa.). Jewart tossed 1.2 innings and gave up one run on two hits. Huey pitched the first 5.1 innings and gave up three runs on eight hits, while stiking out three.
Alderson-Broaddus slipped to 9-7 on the year.
Pitt Johnstown will wrap-up the four-game series against Alderson-Broaddus on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. at the Point Stadium. The Mountain Cats will then host a doubleheader against Daivs & Elkins (WV) College on Tuesday, before opening the WVIAC conference schedule at home with doubleheaders against West Liberty State (WV) College on Saturday, March 29 and Sunday, March 30. All six doubleheaders are scheduled to start at 1:00 p.m. at the Point Stadium.
