Mountain Cats Split With West Virginia State on Senior Day

After being held to one hit and suffering a 2-0 loss in Saturday's Senior Day opener at George R. Walter Field, the Mountain Cats exploded for 14 hits in a 12-9 come-from-behind win to earn a split against WVIAC Southern Division rival West Virginia State. Pitt Johnstown is now 13-16 overall and 6-3 in the WVIAC, while the Yellow Jackets are 25-13 and 12-4 in the WVIAC.
In Game one, West Virginia State scored two runs in the top of the third inning and earned the 2-0 shutout behind a six inning, one hit perfromance by Mike Barron. Barron, who struckout nine, gave up a lead-off double to Mountain Cat shortstopChris Turka (Natrona Heights, Pa.) in the bottom of the fourth inning. Brandon Halstead had two hits and an RBI and Jonathan Stowers drove in the Yellow Jacket's other run. Barron improved to 5-0 and Pat Muldoon picked up his second save of the year after pitching a perfect seventh inning. Pitt Johnstown senior right hander Zach Stere (Bellwood, Pa.) surrendered just two runs on five hits, but took the loss and droppd to 2-4. Stere also struckout six and walked five.
In the nightcap, Pitt Johnstown took a 6-4 lead with four runs in the third inning, but Wst Virginia State answered with four runs of their own in the top of the fifth inning, highlighted by Jeff Miller's three-run homerun over the wind screen in center field to take a 9-6 lead. However, the Mountain Cats batled back with a six-run bottom of the fifth inning to secure the win. Senior catcher Paul Pentz (Johnstown, Pa.) went 2-for-3 with a two run homerun and four RBI, while sophomore outfielder Matt Hanley (Delmont, Pa.) had four hits and a pair of RBI. Senior outfielder Cody Gallaher (Sidman, Pa.) had two hits and two RBI, and junior second baseman Dan Delsignore (Johnstown, Pa.) added two hits, an RBI and two runs to help lead Pitt Johnstown. Miller finished with two hits and four RBI. Mountain Cat sophomore right hander Chuck Boring (Dilltown, Pa.) improved to 4-1. Boring gave up eight runs on seven hits and struckout seven Yellow Jackets. Senior Justin Ronan (Portage, Pa.) tossed a scoreless seventh inning and earned his second save. Travis Mcgrath suffered the loss in relief and fell to 2-2.
Prior to the game, Pitt Johnstown recognized seniors Bill Colosimo (Summerhill, Pa.), Cody Gallaher, Paul Pentz, Justin Ronan and Zach Stere.
The Mountain Cats will host Seton Hill University on Wednesday at 1:00 p.m. at George R. Walter Field, before traveling to Davis & Elkins (WV) College on Friday and to Concord (WV) University for a four-game WVIAC conference series on Saturday and Sunday.
