Baseball Earns 18-4, 8-4 Sweep at Charleston

Pitt Johnstown banged out 21 hits and belted four homeruns in an 18-4 win in game one of Wednesday's doubleheader at the University of Charleston (WV), before collecting 13 more hits to earn an 8-4 win in game two. Matt Hanley (Delmont, Pa.) had five hits and four RBI in the doubleheader. The Mountain Cats, who swept their second doubleheader in as many days, improved to 14-9-1.
In game one, Chris Turka (Natrona Heights, Pa.), Matt Petrowsky (Johnstown, Pa.), Nick Barbera (Harrisburg, Pa.) and Hanley all hit homeruns to lead a 21 hit attack in the 18-4 win. Adam Plummer (Bellwood, Pa.) and Josh Campanella (Allison Park, Pa.) had three hits apiece, while Dan DelSignore (Johnstown, Pa.), Justin Demek (Cabot, Pa.), Hanley, Turka and Barbera each had a pair of hits. Barbera drove in three runs, and Demek, Hanley and Plummer all knocked in two runs in the lopsided win. Freshman right hander Jon Moore (Leechburg, Pa.) improved to 3-0 after giving up three runs on four hits in four innings-pitched. Moore also struckout three Charleston hitters. James Mehall (South Fork, Pa.) tossed two scoreless innings in his second appearance of the year.
In game two, freshman left hander Drew Shawlis (Somerset, Pa.) earned his first collegiate win after striking out four and holding the Golden Eagles scoreless on two hits in four innings of work. Hanley went 3-for-4 with two RBI, and Dan Mangini (Lower Burrell, Pa.) had three hits and an RBI. Erik Toumisto (Northumberland, Pa.) chipped in two hits and drove in one.
With the losses, Charleston fell to 7-22 on the season.
The Mountain Cats open the WVIAC conference schedule at home with doubleheaders against West Liberty State (WV) College on Saturday and Sunday. Both home doubleheaders are scheduled to start at 1:00 p.m. at the Point Stadium.
