Baseball Sweeps West Liberty State, 10-3, 4-3, in WVIAC Opener

Josh Campanella (Allison Park, Pa.) collected four hits in the opener, and David Huey (Glen Campbell, Pa.) pitched six strong innings in the nightcap to lead the Mountain Cat baseball team to a 10-3 and 4-3 sweep over West Liberty State (WV) College in Saturday's WVIAC opener at the Point Stadium. Pitt Johnstown has won 11of its last 13 games and improved to 16-9-1 overall and 2-0 in confence play.
In game one, the Mountain Cats scored four runs in the fourth inning and added three more runs in the fifth inning to break open a 3-3 tie in the 10-3 win. Chuck Boring (Dilltown, Pa.) tossed six innings and gave up three runs on four hits, while striking out five to improve to 2-1. Pitt Johnstown took a 1-0 lead with three straight hits in the first inning, before adding two more runs in the third inning. West Liberty State tied the game on Cory Finley's three-run homeun to left field in the top of the fourth. However, the Mountain Cats answered with four runs on four hits in the bottom of the fourth, before scoring three unearned runs in the fifth inning to put the game away. Campanella went 4-for-4 with a double, two RBI and a pair of runs scored. Justin Demek (Cabot, Pa.) had two hits and scored two runs, and Matt Hanley (Delmont, Pa.) drove in two runs for Pitt Johnstown, which banged out 12 hits.
In game two, Huey gave up three runs (2 earned) on five hits to raise his record to 4-1. Huey also fanned four Hilltoppers. The Mountain Cats opened up a 4-0 lead with two runs in each of the second and fourth innings. The Hilltoppers followed with their three runs in the fifth inning, but junior right hander Eric Faint (Johnstown, Pa.) pitched a scoreless seventh inning to secure the win and earn his second save of the year. Adam Plummer (Bellwood, Pa.) and Dan Mangini (Lower Burrell, Pa.) each had two hits, including a double, and Chris Turka (Natrona Heights, Pa.) and Erik Tuomisto (Northumberland, Pa.) had two RBI apiece.
West Liberty State fell to 4-13 and 0-2 in the WVIAC.
The Mountain Cats finish a four-game WVIAC series against West Liberty State with a doubleheader on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. at the Point Stadium. Pitt Johnstown will also host a non-conference doubleheader against West Virginia State University on Wednesday at 1:00 p.m. at the Point Stadium.
