Mountain Cats Split Sunday's Doubleheader With West Liberty State

Freshman Kaleb Fleck (Claysburg, Pa.) pitched six scoreless innings in an 11-0 win in game one, but West Liberty State (WV) College scored three runs in the seventh inning to earn a 9-8 win in game two of Sunday's WVIAC doubleheader at the Point Stadium. With the split, Pitt Johnstown took three out of four games in the weekend series and improved to 17-10-1 overall and 3-1 in WVIAC play.
In Sunday's opener, the Mountain Cats jumped out to a 3-0 lead with three runs on four hits in the first inning, before adding five unearned runs on six more hits in the third inning, en route to the 11-0 win. With the score already 8-0, Pitt Johnstown added three more insurance runs in the fifth inning, highlighted by Matt Hanley's (Delmont, Pa.) long two-run homerun over the left field screen. The Mountain Cats collected 15 hits and got six strong shutout innings from. Fleck surrendered just a pair of hits, fanned five ande wlaked four to raise his record to 3-1. Sophomore Jim Mehall (South Fork, Pa.) pitched a scoreless seventh inning in relief of Fleck. Justin Demek (Cabot, Pa.) went 3-for-4 with three RBI and a run scored. Adam Plummer (Bellwood, Pa.) had three hits, an RBI and a run scored. Hanley finished with two hits and three RBI, while Chris Turka (Natrona Heights, Pa.) had two hits and drove in two runs. Freshman Drew Shaulis (Somerset, Pa.) also banged out two hits and knocked in two runs.
In the nightcap, junior right hander Ben Watkins (Johnstown, Pa.) gave up four first inning runs, but Pitt Johnstown answered with four of its own in the bottom on the inning. The Hilltoppers added two unearned runs in the top of the second inning to take a 6-4 lead and held that lead until the fifth inning when the Mountain Cats tallied four more runs on three hits. However, West Liberty State, trailing 8-6, battled back with three runs off of Eric Faint (Johnstown, Pa.) in the seventh inning and reclaimed the lead, 9-8. The Hilltoppers Cory Finley struckout two and closed the door on the Mountain Cats in the bottom of the inning to secure the save . Faint took the loss and dropped to 1-1 after giving up three runs on two hits. Faint also walked three and fanned one. Watkins pitched four inning and gave up six runs (3 earned runs) on eight hits, while striking out five and walking three. The Mountain Cats managed just four hits, one single apiece by Dan DelSignore (Johnstown, Pa.) Hanley, Plummer and Shaulis. Hanley also drove in two runs and scored two.
With the Spilt West Liberty State is now 5-14 overall and 1-3 in conference play.
Pitt Johnstown will host a non-conference doubleheader against West Virginia State University on Wednesday at 1:00 p.m. at the Point Stadium.
