Mountain Cats Split to Finish Series at Concord

Sophomore outfielder Matt Hanley (Delmont, Pa.) went 3-for-3 with three RBI to lead Pitt Johnstown to a 6-3 win to open Sunday's doubleheader at Concord (WV) University. However, the Mountain Cats dropped game two, 18-5, to split the doubleheader and the weekend WVIAC conference series. Pitt Johnstown is now 16-18 overall and 8-5 in the WVIAC.
Hanley's three hits led a 12-hit attack by the Mountain Cats in the opener. Senior catcher Paul Pentz (Johnstown, Pa.) added two hits, while senior first baseman Bill Colosimo (Summerhill, Pa.), freshman designated hitter Justin Demek (Cabot, Pa.) and freshman outfielder Brad Dale (Windber, Pa.) each drove in one run for Head Coach Todd William's Mountain Cats. Junior right hander David Huey (Glen Campbell, Pa.) improved to 2-1 after pitching five innings and giving up three runs on five hits. Huey also struckout four. Senior Justin Ronan (Portage, Pa.) tossed tossed a perfect seventh inning to earn his third save of the year.
In game two, Concord jumped on Pitt Johnstown right hander Eric Faint (Johnstown, Pa.) for seven first inning runs en route to the 18-5 win. Junior shortstop Chris Turka (Natrona Heights, Pa.) had two hits, including his first homerun of the season, and a pair of RBI, while freshman third baseman Josh Campanella (Allison Park, Pa.) collected two hits and an RBI in the loss. Faint, who did not get out of the first inning, gave up seven runs on four hits and fell to 1-3.
With the split, Concord is now 20-16 overall and 11-5 in the WVIAC.
The Mountain Cats will break for finals, before traveling to play doubleheaders at the University of Charleston (WV) on Saturday and West Virginia Wesleyan College on Sunday.
