Baseball Splits at Home With West Virginia State

Adam Plummer (Bellwood, Pa.) had three hits and Josh Campanella (Allison Park, Pa.) hit a two-run homerun to lead the Mountain Cats to an 8-2 win in Wednesday's first game of a doubleheader against West Virginia State University at the Point Stadium. However, the Yellow Jackets scored five first inning runs in game two and held on for a 6-4 win to earn a split. Pitt Johnstown is now 18-11-1 on the year.
In Wednesday's opener, the Mountain Cats banged out 13 hits, and freshman right hander Jon Moore (Leechburg, Pa.) held West Virginia State to one run on five hits in the 8-2 win. Pitt Johnstown took a 2-0 lead on Campanella's two-run homerun over the left field screen in the bottom of the first inning. The Yellow Jackets added a run in the second inning, but the Mountain Cats added single runs in the fourth and fifth innings, before putting the game out of reach with four more runs in the sixth inning. Moore tossed 5.1 innings and struckout three to improve to 4-0. Campanella finished with a pair of RBI and two runs scored, while Plummer went 3-for-4with a double and a triple. Matt Hanley (Delmont, Pa.) and Chris Turka (Natrona Heights, Pa.) each had two hits and two RBI, and Dan DelSignore (Johnstown, Pa.) collected two doubles and scored two runs.
In the nightcap, West Virginia State scored five runs on five hits in the top of the first inning off of Mountain Cat starter Mike Jewart (Natrona Heights, Pa.) and held on for a 6-4 win. Jewart took the loss and fell to 2-1 after pitching just 2/3 of an inning. Pitt Johnstown cut the lead to 4-2 on Dan Mangini's (Lower Burrell, Pa.) two-run double in the fourth inning, befoe DelSignore belted a two-run homer in the fifth inning to get Pitt Johnstown to within 5-4. However, Robert Hawkin's solo blast in the top of the seventh inning added an insurance run for the Yellow Jackets, who were able to work out of two bases-loaded situations late in the game and secure the win. Mangini and Delsignore each had two hits and two RBI, while Drew Shaulis (Somerset, Pa.) had two hits and scored a run.
With the split, the Yellow Jackets are now 16-9.
Pitt Johnstown travels to Wheeling Jesuit (WV) University for a four-game WVIAC series on Saturday and Sunday, before hosting non-conference doubleheaders against West Virginia Wesleyan College on April 9 and Ohio Valley (WV) University on April 10.
