Mountain Cats Earn Doubleheader Split at Clarion University

03/31/2005

For the third straight day, the Pitt Johnstown baseball team was in action, and for the third straight time, the Mountain Cats came away with a doubleheader split following a 4-2 loss and a 6-1 victory at Clarion University, Thursday afternoon. Pitt Johnstown, ranked sixth in the North Atlantic Region, is 15-7 on the season.
In game one, senior outfielder Adam Fairman (Creekside, Pa.) and freshman shortstop Chris Turka (Natrona Heights, Pa.) each had a single and an RBI, but it wasn't enough to lead the Mountain Cats to a victory. Sophomore left hander Adam Plummer (Bellwood, Pa.) suffered the loss and dropped to 0-1.
In game two, Pitt Johnstown rebounded with a 6-1 win, led by sophomore right hander Zach Stere's (Bellwood, Pa.) five-hit, complete-game effort. Stere, now 2-0 on the year, gave up just one run and struck out four Clarion hitters. Fairman went 2-for-3 with an RBI and sophomore outfielder Cody Gallaher (Sidman, Pa.) added two hits. Junior catcher Josh Mearkle (Everett, Pa.) collected a two-run single in the win. With the split, Clarion is 8-7.
Pitt Johnstown travels to Ohio Valley (WV) College on Saturday, before making its 2005 home debut with a doubleheader on Sunday at noon against Ohio Valley College.
