Baseball Splits to Open WVIAC Series at Shepherd

The Mountain Cats used four homeruns and a seven-run first inning to earn a 12-11 victory in Saturday's WVIAC series opener at Shepherd (WV) University. However, Shepherd answered with an 11-2 win in the nightcap to earn the split. With the split, Pitt Johnstown is now 25-14-1 overall and 7-3 in the WVIAC Northern Division.
In game one, the Mountain Cats jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the first inning, before holding on for the 12-11 win. Matt Hanley (Delmont, Pa.) and Drew Shaulis (Somerset, Pa.) each belted three-run homeruns, while Adam Plummer (Bellwood, Pa.) hit a two-run homer and Dan DelSignore (Johnstown, Pa.) led off the game with a solo homerun. Hanley finished 3-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored. Shaulis and DelSignore each had two hits. Junior right hander Mike Jewart (Natrona Heights, Pa.) improved to 3-1 after pitching 2.2 innings in relief of starter David Huey (Glen Campbell, Pa.). Jewart gave up four runs on three hits and fanned two. Eric Faint (Johnstown, Pa.) collected his six save of the season. Faint struckout four and gave up one run on two hits in 2.2 innings of work.
In game two, the Rams climbed out to a 9-1 lead after four innings en route to the 11-2 win. Matt Petrowsky (Johnstown, Pa.) and Shaulis each had two hits, while Plummer and DelSignore each drove in a run for the Mountain Cats. Freshman Kaleb Fleck (Claysburg, Pa.) allowed nine runs on 12 hits in 3.1 innings and took the loss to fall to 4-2.
With the split, Shepherd is now 20-16 overall and 5-5 in WVIAC Northern Division play.
The Mountain Cats wrap-up a four-game WVIAC series on Sunday before hosting Fairmont State (WV) University for a doubleheader on Wednesday at 1:00 p.m.
