Mountain Cats Split Another Doubleheader With Shepherd

After splitting a doubleheader against WVIAC Northern Division rival Shepherd (WV) University on Saturday, the Mountain Cat baseball team did the same on Sunday. Pitt Johnstown dropped game on 5-3, but rebounded behind three hits and three RBI from Matt Hanley (Delmont, Pa.) in a 7-4 victory in game two. The Mountain Cats are now 26-15-1 overall and 8-4 in WVIAC Division play.
In Sunday's opener, Pitt Johnstown took a 1-0 lead in the first inning, but Shepherd answered with three runs in the third inning and two more in the fourth inning off of Mountain Cat starter Chuck Boring (Dilltown, Pa.) to secure the 5-3 win. Adam Plummer (Bellwood, Pa.) went 2-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored, while Justin Demek (Cabot, Pa.) added a hit and an RBI. Boring took the loss and fell to 3-3 after giving up five runs on two hits in 3-plus innings of work. Jon Moore (Leechburg, Pa.) pitched three innings and did not give up a run. Moore surrendered just one hit and struckout two.
In the nightcap, Pitt Johnstown built a 4-1 lead after three innings and went on to the 7-4 win. Hanley went 3-for-4 with a double, three RBI and a run scored. Matt Petrowsky (Johnstown, Pa.) had two hits, including a solo homerun in the first inning. Josh Campanella (Allison Park, Pa.) also had two hits and drove in a run. Junior right hander Ben Watkins (Johnstown, Pa.) pitched six innings to improve to 3-2. Watkins gave up four runs on seven hits and fanned nine Shepherd hitters. Eric Faint (Johnstown, Pa.) tossed the final inning and struckout one to collect his team-leading seventh save of the season.
With the split, Shepherd is now 21-17 overall and 6-6 in WVIAC Northern Division play.
The Mountain Cats host Fairmont State (WV) University for a doubleheader on Wednesday at 1:00 p.m., before celebrating Senior Weekend with a WVIAC four-game series against Seton Hill University on Saturday and Sunday. Sunday will also mark "Community Day". Both doubleheaders will start at 1:00 p.m.
