Baseball Suffers Sweep at Charleston

After being held to one hit in Wednesday's 4-0 WVIAC doubleheader opener loss at the University of Charleston (WV), Pitt-Johnstown had runners on second and third in the seventh inning of the nightcap, but failed to score and suffered a 4-2 loss. The Mountain Cats dropped to 10-20 overall and 6-10 in the WVIAC Northern Division.
In game one, an RBI single by John Schraer and a two-run triple by Timmy Rein put Charleston in front 3-0 after two innings. The Golden Eagles added one more in the third to set the final at 4-0.
Pitt-Johnstown managed just one hit, a third inning single by Scott Zubik (Pittsburgh, Pa.), off of Charleston pitcher Jake Ciolfi, who tossed a complete-game shutout.
Alex Naggy (Greensburg, Pa.) took the loss and slipped to 0-2 after surrendering four runs on six hits in six innings.
In game two, the Mountain Cats took and early lead with two runs in the top of the second. Drew Westover (Flinton, Pa.) walked and eventually scored on a passed ball, before Zach Vignero's (Johnstown, Pa.) single to left field drove home Andy Rubal (Johnstown, Pa.) with the second run.
Charleston cut it to 2-1 with a run in the third inning, before scoring three more on four hits in the sixth to go up 4-2.
In the Mountain Cat seventh, Drew Shaulis (Somerset, Pa.) led off with a walk, and Seth Roy (Bedford, Pa.) singled to left. Zubik's sacrfice bunt moved both runners up. However, Nick Barbera (Harrisburg, Pa.) grounded out to third, and Josh Campanella (Allison Park, Pa.) grounded out to second to end the game.
Roy had two hits in three at-bats for Pitt-Johnstown, while Westover, Rubal, and Vignero accounted for the other three Pitt-Johnstown hits.
John Fees (Carrolltown, Pa.) allowed four runs (3 earned ) on eight hits in 5.1 innings of work. Fees, who fell to 4-2, also struck out three and walked one.
With the sweep, Charleston improved to 9-24 overall and 5-13 in the WVIAC Southern Division.
The Mountain Cats will host a three-game WVIAC Northern Division series against Wheeling Jesuit (WV) University on Saturday and Sunday, before hosting a WVIAC doubleheader against Concord (WV) University on Tuesday at 1 p.m. at the Point Stadium. All three games will start at 1 p.m. at the Point Stadium.
