03/11/2009

The Mountain Cat baseball team, which received two votes in the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) national poll, improved to 10-2 on the year with a 6-5 and a 7-6 victory in nine innings over American International (MA) College on Wednesday to wrap up the spring trip in Fort Pierce, FL. Dan Mangini (Lower Burrell, Pa.) drove in the game-winner in the opener, and Matt Hanley's (Delmont, Pa.) RBI single in the ninth inning led Pitt-Johnstown to the sweep.
In game one, Mangini went 2-for-5 with an RBI, and Hanley added two hits, including a double and an RBI. Drew Shaulis (Somerset, Pa.), Justin Demek (Cabot, Pa.), Ryan Stough (Dover, Pa.) and Nick Barbera (Harrisburg, Pa.) all drove in runs. Eric Faint (Johnstown, Pa.) picked-up his third win of the year after pitching three innings in releif of starter Jon Moore (Leechburg, Pa.). Faint gave up three unearned runs on just one hit. Moore got the start and gave up two runs on four hits in four innings of work.
In the nightcap, Barbera had three hits in five at-bats, including a pair of doubles, while Hanley collected two more hits and an RBI. Shaulis started and surrendered one unearned run in 4.2 innings, but did not factor in the decision. Bill Wasko (Bethel Park, Pa.) earned his first win of the season after pitching 2.1 scoreless innings in relief. Wasko gave up just one hit.
The Mountain Cats will play a doubleheader at Salem International (WV) University on Saturday, before returning home to host a doubleheader against the Tigers on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. at Johnstown's Point Stadium.
