Mountain Cats Eliminated From WVIAC Tournament With 10-1 Loss to West Virginia State

Dan Mangini (Lower Burrell, Pa.) collected three hits, but West Virginia State belted a pair of three-run homeruns off of Ben Watkins (Johnstown, Pa.) en route to a 10-1 win in Friday's elimination game of the 2008 WVIAC Tournament at the Point Stadium. The Mountain Cats, who went 0-2 in the tournament, are now 35-17-1.
West Virginia State's Todd McQuiston tossed 8 1/3 strong innings, fanned nine and limited the Mountain Cats to five hits.
Bo Darby got the Yellow Jackets off to a quick start with a three-run first inning homer. The Jackets would extend the lead to 6-0 in the third on another three-run long ball from J.D. Broderick. West Virginia State tacked on another run in the sixth inning and three more in the ninth to take a 10-0 lead. Pitt Johnstown scored its lone run and set the final score at 10-1 when freshman Nick Barbera (Harrisburg, Pa.) scored on a wild pitch with one out in the bottom of the ninth inning.
Mangini had three of Pitt Johnstown's six hits, while Josh Campanella (Allison Park, Pa.), Adam Plummer (Bellwood, Pa.) and Barbera accounted for the other three.
Darby finished with four RBIs, while Broderick had a pair of hits and drove in three. Michael Deleeuw and Ryne Holstine each had two hits for the Yellow Jackets who improved to 33-12.
Watkins was tagged with the defeat for Pitt-Johnstown, giving up four hits and as many earned runs in three innings. Watkins dropped to 4-3.
West Virginia State advances to Saturday's play. Their opponent and game time will be determined following the conclusion of the 9:00 a.m. Concord versus Alderson-Broaddus contest.
