Mountain Cats Split at Home With Clarion

03/18/2009

The Mountain Cat baseball team, ranked #23 in this week's NCBWA national poll, suffered a 10-5 loss to Clarion University in the opener of Wednesday's doubleheader at the Point Stadium, but rebounded with a 3-2 win to earn the split in the nightcap. Josh Campanella's (Allison Park, Pa.) double play ground out in the bottom of the sixth inning scored Matt Petrowsky (Johnstown, Pa.) with the game-winning run. Pitt-Johnstown is now 15-3.
In game one, Clarion jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning, but Matt Staub's (Latrobe, Pa.) double scored Nick Barbera (Harrisburg, Pa.) in the bottom of the inning to cut it to 2-1. Pitt-Johnstown added three runs in the third inning to take a 4-3 lead, highlighted by Matt Hanley's (Delmont, Pa.) ground-rule double to right center that plated Barbera and Drew Shaulis (Somerset, Pa.). The Golden Eagles battled back to go up 6-5 in the fifth inning, before adding four more runs in the seventh inning off of Bill Wasko (Bethel Park, Pa.) to seal the win.
Hanley finished 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI, while Barbera singled in three at-bats and scored two runs for Pitt-Johnstown. Joe Novotny (Johnstown, Pa.) got the start and gave up four runs on four hits in 3.1 innings of work. Mike Jewart (Natrona Heights, Pa.) suffered the loss in relief and fell to 0-1 after surrendering two runs on three hits in 1.2 innings.
In game two, Clarion built a 2-0 lead in the second inning on Jason Krimsky's long two-run homer to right field. However, Staub knotted the game with a two-run blast of his own over the left field screen in the bottom of the third. The score remained the same until the sixth inning. Petrowsky led off the inning with a triple and eventually scored the game-winner on Campanella's double play ground out.
Dan Mangini (Lower Burrell, Pa.) collected two hits, while Staub added two RBI. Eric Faint (Johnstown, Pa.) improved to 4-0 after pitching 1.2 inning in relief of Shaulis. Faint gave up just one hit, walked one and struck out two. Shaulis tossed the first 5.1 innings and gave up two runs on four hits. Shaulis also fanned four in the no-decision.
With the split, Clarion is now 3-10 on the year.
The Mountain Cats open the 2009 WVIAC schedule with a pair of doubleheaders at Seton Hill University on Saturday and Sunday, before returning home to host a doubleheader against Bluefield State (WV) College on Wedensday at noon at Johnstown's Point Stadium.
