03/21/2009

After suffering a tough 5-4 loss in Saturday's WVIAC opener at Seton Hill University, the Mountain Cats got homeruns from Matt Hanley (Delmont, Pa.), Justin Demek (Cabot, Pa.) and Matt Petrowsky (Johnstown, Pa.) to earn a 7-0 victory in the nightcap. Pitt-Johnstown, ranked #23 in the this week's NCBWA national poll, is now 16-4 overall and 1-1 in the WVIAC.
In game one, Tom Deangelis' walk-off two-run single in the bottom of the seventh inning gave Seton Hill a come-from-behind 5-4 win. Eric Faint (Johnstown, Pa.) took the loss and slipped to 4-1. Faint surrendered two runs on two hits in 1.2 innings in relief of starter Kaleb Fleck (Claysburg, Pa.). Fleck pitched the first five-plus innings and gave up three runs on five hits. Fleck also walked three and struck out seven. Drew Westover (Flinton, Pa.) went 3-for-3 with a double, while Hanley added two hits in four at-bats. Dan Mangini (Lower Burrell, Pa.) belted a solo homerun, and Josh Campanella (Allison Park, Pa.) and Matt Staub (Latrobe, Pa.) each drove in a run.
In game two, Hanley collected three more hits, including his team-laeading fifth homerun of the year and three RBI. Demek was 2-for-3 with a homerun, and Petrowsky hit his thrid homer of the season. Staub had two hits and drove in a run. Senior right-hander Ben Watkins (Johnstown, Pa.) tossed a three-hit, complete-game shutout to improve to 3-0. Watkins, who has not given up an earned run in 24 innings-pitched, walked one and fanned five.
With the split, Seton Hill is now 9-7 overall and 1-1 in conference play.
The Mountain Cats play a WVIAC doubleheader at Seton Hill University on Sunday, before returning home to host a doubleheader against Bluefield State (WV) College on Wedensday at noon at Johnstown's Point Stadium.
