Goal in 89th Minute Sinks Mountain Cat Soccer

09/04/2006

After battling back three times to tie the score, Head Coach Eric Kinsey's men's soccer team suffered a tough, 4-3, loss when Pitt Greensburg scored the game winning goal in the 89th minute in the final round of the 2006 Mountain Cat Kick-Off Classic, Monday afternoon. Pitt Johnstown is now 1-1-0 to start the season.
Pitt Greensburg jumped out to a 1-0 lead just 2:21 into the match, but the Mountain Cats answered on sophomore Jason Swope's (Indiana, Pa.) goal off of a pass from Chris Hawkins (Scottdale, Pa.) at 25:30. Pitt Greensburg took the lead again in the 34th minute until Hawkins found the back of the net off of assists from Swope and John Kotchey (Gibsonia, Pa) at 34:03 to even the score at 2-2. That was the score the teams took into the halftime break.
Fourteen minutes into the second half Pitt Greensburg regained the lead. However, the Mountain Cats responded to tie the score 3-3 when Hawkins tallied his second goal of the match from Vince Spillane (Pittsburgh, Pa.) and Steve Fertig (Natrona Heights, Pa.).
It looked like overtime was in the future for both teams, but with just 1:13 left to play, Pitt Greensburg's Ryan Stolz beat Mountain Cat freshman goalkeeper Craig Neff (Elizabethtown, Pa.) to set the final score at 4-3 in favor of Pitt Greensburg. Neff, now 1-1-0 on the year, faced 12 shots and made three saves, including a sliding save off of a penalty kick late in the second half.
The Mountain Cats begin a four-match road trip at California University (PA) on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. Pitt Johnstown will play its next home match on Thursday, September 21 at 4:30 p.m. against Mount Aloysius College.
