Mountain Cat Soccer Defeats UDC in Final Round of Pitt-Johnstown Kick-Off Classic

08/31/2008

The Mountain Cat men's soccer team used first half goals from senior forwards Arik Misler (Johnstown, Pa.) and Jason Swope (Indiana, Pa.) to defeat the University of the District of Columbia 2-1 in Sunday's final round of the 2008 Pitt-Johnstown Kick-Off Classic. Head coach Eric Kinsey's Mountain Cats improved to 2-0-0.
Pitt-Johnstown climbed out to a 1-0 lead just eight minutes into the match when Swope found the back of the net after Firebirds' goalkeeper Isiah Munoz lost control of a rolling shot from the midfield area. Misler followed with a goal two minutes later when he took a pass from Swope and sophomore defender Brian Taslov (Robinson, Pa.) and beat Munoz to the top left corner. The Firebirds cut the lead in half in the 14th minute. Akeil Belfon's chip shot from forty yards floated over the head of Mountain Cat goalkeeper Craig Neff (Elizabethtown, Pa.). That proved to be the last of the scoring, and Pitt-Johnstown was able to hold on for the 2-1 victory.
Pitt-Johnstown, which outshot the Firebirds 17-11 and held an 8-4 advantage in shots on-goal, got three saves from Neff, who improved to 2-0-0. Munoz fell to 0-2-0 after surrendering two goals and making six saves.
In Sunday's first game, #24 Davis & Elkins (WV) College improved to 2-0-0 with a 1-0 win over Chestnut Hill College. Christopher Roberts' goal in the 38th minute proved to be the match-winner for the Senators. P.J. Tucker made 13 saves for Chestnut Hill, but took the loss and dropped to 0-2-0.

Pitt-Johnstown will host Geneva College on Friday at 4:00 p.m.
