Zeke Buchta (Mount Pleasant, Pa.) scored on a first-half free kick, and Nolan Levine (McDonald, Pa.) made a save on a University of the District of Columbia penalty kick to lead the Mountain Cat soccer team to a 1-0 victory over the Firebirds to open the season in Saturday's first round of the 2010 Pitt-Johnstown Kick-Off Classic.
Buchta notched the match's lone goal in the 30th minute when he blasted a free kick by U.D.C. goalkeeper Kyle Heatherington in the bottom right corner.
The Firebirds earned a penalty kick midway through the second half, but Levine made a diving save to his left to preserve the 1-0 lead and help secure the win.
Levine faced 16 U.D.C. shots and made nine saves to earn his first collegiate victory and shutout. Heatherington saw 19 shots and made three saves, but surrendered the game-winning goal.
The Firebirds fell to 0-1-0.
In Saturday's other game, Michael Scruggs scored in the 29th minute to lead West Virginia Wesleyan College to a 1-0 victory over Chestnut Hill College. West Virginia Wesleyan improved to 2-0-0, while Chestnut Hill fell to 0-1-0.
