Mountain Cat Soccer Battles to 1-1 Tie With U.D.C. on Senior Day

10/26/2006

After falling behind 1-0 in the first half on Thursday, Head Coach Eric Kinsey's Mountain Cat soccer team battled back to tie the University of the District of Columbia, 1-1, on junior Chris Hawkin's (Scottdale, Pa.) second half penalty kick goal. The match was called after the first overtime due to darkness. Pitt Johnstown, which celebrated Senior Day and played its final match of the 2006 season, finished the year with an 8-8-2.
The Firebirds opened up a 1-0 lead at the 11:02 mark of the first half, and held that lead until the 68th minute when Hawkins was awarded a penalty kick after there was a foul in the box off of a corner kick. That's when Hawkins' slotted the ball into the right corner to tie the match. After remaining tied through the end of regulation and the first overtime, the match was called due to darkness.
Pitt Johnstown freshman goalkeeper Bob Suskie (Carlisle, Pa.) faced four shots and made three saves. Suskie ended his first collegiate season with a 1-0-1 record.
The Mountain Cats outshot the Firebirds, 18-7, and held a 7-4 advantage in shots on goal.
Prior to the match, Pitt Johnstown recognized this year's seniors, defenders Dan Bauer (North Huntingdon, Pa.) and Steve Fertig (Natrona Heights, Pa.) and midfielders John Kotchey (Gibsonia, Pa.) and James Penn (Pittsburgh, Pa.).
