Dave Fogle's (Summerhill, Pa.) shutout of fifth-ranked Ben Sergent sparked six straight Pitt-Johnstown victories to start the match in a 26-9 victory over No. 14 University of Findlay (OH), Friday night in the Sports Center. The Mountain Cats, ranked No. 8 in NCAA Division II, evened their record at 1-1.
Fogle set the tone for the match and got the Mountain Cats off and running with an impressive 6-0 victory over No. 5 ranked Sergent, before No. 3-ranked Ryan Link (Cresson, Pa.) scored a 10-2 major decision over Nick Weisjahn at 133 lbs.
Pitt-Johnstown extended the lead to 10-0 at 141 lbs. with third-ranked Jack Bachman's (Greensburg, Pa.) 8-1 decision over Chris Andrews.
In a match-up of returning National Qualifiers, No 7-ranked Nathan Link (Cresson, Pa.) earned a 9-1 major decision over Jeremy Espinoza at 149 lbs. Joel Paolo's (Weirton, WV) then won by forfeit at 157 lbs. to extend the Pitt-Johnstown lead to 20-0 midway through the match.
Zach Lundgren (DuBois, Pa.) made it six straight wins for the Mountain Cats with a 5-4 victory over Mason True when he was awarded a stalling point just before the start of overtime. As it turned out, Lundgren sealed the Mountain Cat win.
Findlay broke the streak with 2011 national Champion Michael Lybarger's 7-5 win over Pitt-Johnstown true freshman Travis McKillop (Lower Burrell, Pa.). McKillop led a 4-3 lead after two periods, but Lybarger used an escape and a takedown a minute into the period and held on for the two point victory and cut the deficit to 23-3.
Pitt-Johnstown answered quickly with an 8-6 overtime win by Gary Lantz (Delta, Pa.) at 184 lbs. Lantz trailed Adam Walters 6-4 in the third period, but tied it with a late takedown, before winning in the first overtime.
The Roughnecks closed out the match with decision wins at 197 lbs. and heavyweight to set the final at 26-9. Ashton Brown defeated Zak Newton (Cresson, Pa.), 7-4, and Matt Clum held on for a 9-7 win over Josh Krupa (Bedford, Pa.).
Findlay dropped to 0-1.
The Mountain Cats travel to the 2011 Penn State Open on Sunday and to East Stroudsburg University on Wednesday. Pitt-Johnstown will host its next home match on January 6 when Kutztown University visits the Sports Center for a 7 p.m. start.
