No. 12 Wrestlers Post 4-0-1 Record at Super Region I Duals

In Friday's opener, Nathan Link got a pin, and Brentzel defeated the No. 1-ranked wrestler in the country and the No. 12 Mountain Cats earned an 18-18 with No. 4 Newberry (S.C.) College. In a see-saw match that saw the Mountain Cats take a 18-12 lead with two bouts left, Newberry cut the deficit to four with a win at 197 lbs. It all came down to All-American heavyweight Dempsey. Dempsey suffered a 4-2 loss to Jake Elkins, but the Mountain Cats still held on for the 19-18 win. Newberry took a 3-0 lead with #5-ranked John McDonald's 4-2 sudden victory over Fogle at 125 lbs. Fogle got a third period take to tie the score at two, but McDonald answered with a takedown in the first overtime to earn the win. At 133 lbs., No. 3 Ryan Link's takedown in the sudden victory period gave him a 7-5 win win over No. 5 B.J. Young to knot it at three. Deral Brown defeated 5-3 win over Cawley, but the Mountain Cats got a pin by Nathan Link at 2:31 over Dale DeBacco in the 149-lb. bout to take their first lead of the night at 9-6. #6 Sean Byrnes followed with a fall over Lundgren at 4:01 to give Newberry the lead back at 12-9. The Mountain Cats won the next three matches. Pitt-Johnstown went up 13-12 with Lantz' 13-2 major decision over Braden Carter at 165 lbs and extended it to 19-12 with wins at 174 and 184 lbs. Makin earned a 9-6 decision over Josh Whitelock., before Brentzel upset NCAA #1-ranked Bryant Blanton, 7-6, at 184 lbs. Newberry cut it to 19-15 when John Reed defeated Moore, 8-7, at 197 lbs., setting up the finale at heavyweight. With the loss, Newberry is now 12-4.
