Thad Benton Places Eighth At Midlands Wrestling Tournament; Derrek Bosso Finishes Second at Wilkes Open

Senior National Champion and NCAA Division II #1-ranked Thad Benton (141 lbs.) (Claysburg, Pa.) earned an eighth place finish at the prestigious Midlands Wrestling Tournament at Northwestern (IL) University on Friday, while sophomore Derrek Bosso (141 lbs.) (Pequea, Pa.) posted a 3-1 record and finished second at the 2005 Wilkes University Open.
Benton, who wrapped up the Midlands Tournament with a 3-3 record, opened the tournament with a 5-0 decision over Purdue (IN) University's Jason Cook and a 7-1 victory over Casey Carrino (Eastern Illinois University), before suffering a 2-1 loss to Central Michigan University's Eric Kruger. Benton then rebounded with a 3-1 decision over Willie Horton (UNC-Pembroke). However, Northern Iowa's C.J. Ettelson dealt Benton a 13-6 setback, forcing him into the Seventh Place match, where Dustin Hinschberger (Wartburg) earned a decision victory over Benton.
Senior National Runner-up Ryon Mazzocco (125 lbs.) (Cresson, Pa.) and sophomore All-American Mike Corcetti (Export, Pa.) also competed at the Midlands Tournament. Corcetti ended with a 3-2 record that included a pair of decisions and a major decision victory, while Mazzocco was 0-2.
At Wednesday's Wilkes Open, Bosso opened the tournament with three straight victories, before suffering a 7-2 loss to Rollie Peterkin (Blair Academy) in the championship bout. Bosso defeated Kyle Flickinger (York College), 8-0, Ryan Jablonski (Rutgers-unattached), 2-1 in sudden death and Jerome Greco (Columbia University), 3-1 to advance to the championship round.
Pitt Johnstown will open the second semester at home against Kutztown University on Friday, January 6 at 7:00 p.m. in the Sports Center.
