Lady Cats Suffer 89-75 Home Loss to Clarion

Clarion University, which never trailed, shot nearly 60% in the first half to build 16-point advantage en route to handing the Lady Cats an 89-75 PSAC West division loss, Wednesday night in the Sports Center.  Kelsey Sleighter's 17 points led Pitt-Johnstown, which fell to 7-14 overall and 4-7 in conference-play.
 
The Golden Eagles shot 57% in the first half.  Clarion jumped on the Lady Cats early and built a22-12 lead on Jasmine Boyd's jumper seven minutes into the game.
 
A 3-pointer from Nicole Carman cut it to seven a minute later, but Clarion pushed it out to 13 on a basket from Hannah Heeter, before she hit one of two from the free-throw line to make it 44-28 with 4:33 left in the half.
 
Pitt-Johnstown answered with a 9-0 run, capped by Sleighter's lay-up at 1:18, to get back down to seven, but a bucket by Delrika Jones-Carey with just seconds remaining put the Golden Eagles up 48-38 at the break.
 
The Lady Cats again got the deficit down to seven.  This time, on two Rachel Johnson free-throws four minutes into the second half.
 
However, Clarion slowly began to pull away.  Boyd's basket in the paint at 7:15 matched the Golden Eagles 16-point first half lead.  Tania Holmes then extended it to 21 at 81-60 with 4:30 to play.
 
Pitt-Johnstown tried to come back and narrowed the gap to 10 with 2:05 left on a Kayla DeCriscio 3-pointer, but the Lady Cats couldn't get any closer.
 
Sleighter's 17 points on 8-16 shooting led three Lady Cats who scored in double figures.  Jasmine Harper scored 16 points and grabbed a team-high eight rebounds, and Johnson added 11 points and seven rebounds.  Leah Hansen chipped-in nine points, and Inaya Stephenson has six points and six rebounds off the bench in the loss.
 
Rachel Johnson is in 19th-place on the Lady Cat All-Time Rebounding List with 566, while Carman ranks 29th on the rebounding list with 448.
 
Pitt-Johnstown shot 40.3% (29-72) from the floor, but just 5-25 from 3-point range and 12-20 from the charity stripe.  After shooting 57% in the first, the Golden Eagles ended the night shooting 54.3%.  Clarion was also 1-4 from behind the 3-point line and 12-15 from the free-throw line.
 
Heeter had game-highs of 19 points and 11 rebounds to pace Clarion.  Boyd added 19 points and nine rebounds, and Holmes tallied 12 points and five assists for the Golden Eagles, who improved to 9-12 overall and 3-8 in the PSAC West.
 
The Lady Cats travel to Slippery Rock for PSAC game on Saturday, before hosting a conference doubleheader with the Mountain Cats against Seton Hill on Saturday, February 15th starting at 1 P.M. at the Sports Center.
