Lady Cats Sweep Challenge; McCabe records double-double

Olivia McCabe tallied a game-high 16 points and 14 rebounds, earning her first double-double of the season as the Pitt-Johnstown Lady Cats remain unbeaten, defeating Winston-Salem (N.C.) State University 59-47 Saturday at the Butcher Center in Shepherdstown, W. Va. in their second of two games in the 2016 Shepherd University (W. Va.) University Challenge.

This is the second straight year these schools met in the Shepherd Challenge with Pitt-Johnstown winning last year's contest, 75-61 on Nov. 14, 2015.

The Lady Cats controlled the game from the first period's start by jumping out to a 16-6 advantage with 2:04 remaining in the opening quarter after five points from McCabe and Maurina Nunn.

The team started the second period leading Winston-Salem 19-6 and did not let the lead go as Jamie Tabon added five more points before halftime to help Pitt-Johnstown outscore the Rams,14-8 in the quarter to take a 33-14 halftime lead.

Tabon led the game in points at the half with nine and finished the game with nine points, ten rebounds and three steals. Nunn finished the game with 10 points, three rebounds and three steals in just six minutes of playing time.

The Rams were able to outscore the Lady Cats in the last two quarters, by one-point in the third period and six points in the fourth, but it was not enough as Pitt-Johnstown rolled to a 12-point victory. McCabe scored seven fourth-quarter points help seal the deal.

Winston-Salem (0-2) was led by Trei Torein with 11 points and Taylor Boyd and Jasmine Carter with 10 points each. The Lady Cats advance to 2-0.

Pitt-Johnstown is to kick off conference play next Saturday as they travel to Bloomsburg University for a 1 p.m. tipoff. The Lady Cats are to compete on the road for the next three games before their home opener against Kutztown University Dec. 3 at 1 p.m.
