Williams, Mountain Cats Sweep PSAC West Pair From Clarion

3395Luke Williams homered and drove in six to lead the Mountain Cats to a 14-7 victory in game one of Tuesday's PSAC Western Division doubleheader at Point Stadium.  In the Nightcap, Williams homered again and drove in three more, and Joe Gagliardi had a two-run single in the bottom of the sixth to lift Pitt-Johnstown to the sweep with a 10-9 win.  The Mountain Cats improved to 13-18 overall and 6-8 in the PSAC West.
 
Williams finished the day going 6-for-7 with two homeruns, a double, and nine RBI.
 
Mitch Holmberg doubled off of Brantley Rice to lead off the opener and came around to score on Tyler Falk's two-out singled to left field, but Williams drove long a three-run homerun to left-center in the bottom of the first to give the Mountain Cats a 3-1 lead.
 
Pitt-Johnstown loaded the bases with nobody out in the third and Williams cleared the bases with a double off of the right field fence.  Mason Prickett followed with a single up the middle that scored Williams to increase it to 7-1.
 
The Mountain Cats added four more in the fourth on a balk, a wild pitch, and RBI singles from Prickett and Dylan Kerstetter.
 
Clarion came back with three in the top of the sixth, but Pitt-Johnstown got all three back in the bottom of the inning.  Ernesto Rizzitano had an RBI fielder's choice and Dillon Boyer drove in a pair with a single to center.
 
3376Williams went 4-for-4 with a homer, a double and six RBI, while Kerstetter had three hits and drove in a run to lead Pitt-Johnstown.  Prickett had two hits and a pair of RBI, and Jake Stern added two hits.  Boyer also had two RBI in the win.
 
Brantley Rice earned the win and improved to 4-1 after holding the Golden Eagles to just one run on two hits over the first five innings.
 
Tyler Delval took the loss and slipped to 3-2 after allowing seven earned runs on seven hits in three innings.
 
Falk had two hits and two RBI, and Holmberg collected two hits and scored three runs for Clarion.
 
In game two, the Mountain Cats got the two-run single from Gagliardi in the sixth and were able to complete the sweep.
 
Sean Sleigh's two-run homer over the center field wall in the bottom of the first gave the Mountain Cats an early lead, before Clarion answered with four runs in the second on RBI singles by Mason McGuire, Holmberg, and Delval, and a sacrifice fly from Josh Ponsell.
 
Mike Lockhart's solo homer to lead off the Clarion third increased it to 5-2, but the Mountain Cats responded with run-producing singles from Stern and Williams in their next at-bat to narrow the gap to one.
 
Pitt-Johnstown regained the lead with two more in the sixth.  Nate Negri's sacrifice fly plated Nico Pecora to tie it, and Stern's RBI double plated Rizzitano to put the Mountain Cat up 6-5.
 
The Golden Eagles bounced back with two more in the fifth, but Williams came through for Pitt-Johnstown again.  This time, with a two-run blast over the left field screen to give the lead back to the Mountain Cats.
 
Clarion tied it again with a run in the sixth. However, Gagliardi's two out, two-run singled in Pitt-Johnstown's half of the inning scored Luke Smeltz and Stern with the eventual game-winning runs.
 
Clarion was able to score a run in the seventh, but Tyler Black was able to strikeout out the side and strand a pair of Golden Eagles on base to earn his first win of the year.
 
Williams singled, homered and drove in three, and Sleigh belted a two run homerun for Pitt-Johnstown.  Stern had two hits, including a double and two RBI, and Gagliardi drove in two.
 
Black pitched the final two innings to secure the win in relief and improve to 1-2.  Black allowed two runs on five hits but was able to strikeout the side in the seventh to preserve the victory.
 
Camden Hess started for Pitt-Johnstown and surrendered five runs (3 earned) on six hits over the first three innings.
 
With the sweep, the Golden Eagles have lost their last nine games and fell to 4-21 overall and 1-13 in the PSAC West.
 
Pitt-Johnstown travels to Mercyhurst for a doubleheader on Friday to open a four-game PSAC Western Division series, before hosting the Lakers on Saturday at 1 p.m. at Point Stadium to conclude the series.  The Mountain Cats will then travel to Clarion on April 19 to finish the series against the Golden Eagles.  As a result, Pitt-Johnstown's non-conference game at Bloomsburg on April 19 has been cancelled.
