Jake Stern belted a two-run homerun to help the Mountain Cats just out to an early 3-run lead in Friday's PSAC Western Division opener at Mercyhurst, but the Lakers came back to earn a 7-3 victory, before completing the sweep with an 11-1 win in the nightcap. Pitt-Johnstown slipped to 13-20 overall and 6-10 in the PSAC West.

In game one, Mercyhurst starter Colin McKee allowed three runs in the first three innings, but settled down and held the Mountain Cats scoreless the rest of the way.

Stern's two-run homerun to left in the top of the first inning, followed by
Joe Gagliardi's RBI single in the third put the Mountain Cats in front early.
Â
However, Mercyhurst cut it to 3-2 in the third and took the fifth on Cameron Balego's three-run homerun.
Â
The Lakers added two more insurance runs in the sixth and went on to the 7-3 win.
Â
Stern had three hits, including a homer and a double, while
Luke Williams,
Dylan Kerstetter,
Luke Smeltz, and Gagliardi all singled for the Mountain Cats.

Shane Supanick took the loss and dropped to 2-1 after giving up five earned runs on four Mercyhurst hits over the first 4.2 innings.Â
Luke Miller pitched the final 1.1 innings and gave up two runs on one hit.

Balego homered and drove in three, and Daniel Elliott had two hits and two RBI to pace Mercyhurst.

McKee tossed a complete-game for the Lakers and surrendered three runs on seven hits. McKee also fanned 11 and walked two.

In game two, the Lakers built a 4-0 lead after two innings, and broke it open with seven more in the third on their way to the 11-1 win.

After falling behind 11-0, Pitt-Johnstown got on the scoreboard on the sixth on
Scott Thompson's solo homerun to left, but that was as close as it would get.

Along with Thompson's homer,
Ernesto Rizzitano doubled, and
Sean Sleigh, Gagliardi, and Kerstetter all singled for the Mountain Cats.

Ken Gault started for Pitt-Johnstown and allowed eight earned runs on eight hits in two innings to fall to 1-3.

Austin Alonge, Chris Gonzalez, and Jimmy Latona all belted homeruns for Mercyhurst.

Cam Knott pitched the first six innings for the Lakers and gave up one run on five hits to improve to 7-1 on the season.

With the sweep, Mercyhurst improved to 26-9 overall and 14-4 in the PSAC West.

Pitt-Johnstown will close out the four-game PSAC Western Division series against Mercyhurst with a doubleheader on Saturday at 1 p.m. at Point Stadium, before traveling to Clarion on Tuesday to complete the conference series that was rescheduled due to the weather.Â
