Mercyhurst Completes Four-Game Sweep Over Mountain Cats

3368After earning an 8-2 win in Saturday's PSAC Western Division opener at Point Stadium, Mercyhurst scored a pair of runs in the eighth inning to complete the four-game series sweep with a 12-11 victory.  Pitt-Johnstown fell to 13-22 overall and 6-12 in conference-play.
 
In game one, scored four runs in the first and added three more in the sixth on its way to the 8-2 win.
 
Mercyhurst jumped on Mountain Cat starter Brantley Rice for four runs on six hits in the top of the first inning.  Five consecutive singles to start the game gave the Lakers a 3-0 lead, before Sabatino DiNardo's double down the left field line scored Daniel Elliott to make it 4-0.
 
Colin Fantaskey's two-out single to left in the Mercyhurst fifth drove home Cameron Balego to increase it to 5-0.
 
Pitt-Johnstown scratched out two runs in the bottom of the frame.  Mason Prickett walked, moved to third on Ernesto Rizzitano's double down the right field line and scored on Dillon Boyer's ground out.  Nate Negri then singled up the middle to plate Rizzitano and cut it to 5-2.
 
However, the Lakers came right back with three runs (2 unearned) in the top of the sixth to rebuild the lead 8-2.
 
3387Kerstetter and Rizzitano each doubled for Pitt-Johnstown, and Boyer and Negri accounted for the two Pitt-Johnstown runs.
 
Rice suffered the loss and fell to 4-2 after allowing five earned runs on 12 hits over the first five innings.  Ben Foose tossed the final two innings and gave up three runs (1 earned) on three hits.
 
Hank Morrison had three hits and an RBI, and drove in three to lead Mercyhurst.
 
Joe Gnacinski improved to 5-1 on the year for the Lakers after giving up two earned runs on three hits in five innings.
 
In game two, Mercyhurst scored two runs off of Pitt-Johnstown reliever Tyler Black to break a 10-10 tie and held off Pitt-Johnstown 12-11.
 
Mercyhurst score an unearned run in the top of the first, but Pitt-Johnstown scored six in the second to take the lead.  Boyer and Negri drew back-to-back bases loaded walks, and Jake Stern's single to left scored Rizzitano to make it 3-1.  Boyer and Negri scored on a wild pitch and an throwing error by Mercyhurst catcher, and Stern scored on another wild pitch.
 
The Lakers got two of those runs back in the top of the third and one more in the fourth to narrow it to one, before Stern's ground out in the bottom of the frame scored Negri to get it to 7-5.
 
Mercyhurst battled all the back to retake the lead with four runs in the fifth and extended it to 10-7 midway through the sixth.
 
Again, the Mountain Cats came back.  This time, with three runs in their half of the sixth to knot it at 10.
 
However, the Lakers scored a pair on the top of the eighth.  DiNardo's sacrifice fly to center scored Morrison, and Jimmy Latona had an RBI single up the middle to make it 12-10.
 
Pitt-Johnstown cut it to 12-11, but Mercyhurst closer Jake Hall went on to strike out the side to preserve the win.
 
Boyer went 3-for-3 with an RBI, and Stern had two hits and two RBI for Pitt-Johnstown.  Rizzitano also had two hits.
 
Black took the loss and slipped to 1-3 after surrendering two runs on three hits in two innings.
 
With the sweep, the Lakers improved to 28-9 overall and 16-4 in the PSAC West.
 
Pitt-Johnstown travels to Clarion on Tuesday to complete the PSAC West series that was rescheduled due to the weather, before opening a four-game conference series with Indiana (PA) on Friday at 1 p.m. at Point Stadium.
