Indiana University (PA) clawed its way back from deficits in each end of Saturday's PSAC Western Division doubleheader in Indiana to sweep Pitt-Johnstown, 10-5 and 10-8. The Mountain Cats slipped to 16-25 overall and 9-15 in conference-play.
In game one, IUP erased a three-run deficit with three runs in the third inning, before adding six more in the sixth to take the 10-5 win.
Pitt-Johnstown scored two runs in the first and two more in the third on a sacrifice fly from
Sean Sleigh and an RBI single from
Nico Pecora, but the Crimson Hawks answered with three in the bottom of the inning to tie it.
IUP then scored six in the sixth, including a two-run double by Dan Sepic and a two-run triple by Rick Jones.
Ben Foose took the loss in relief of starter
Camden Hess after surrendering four runs and not recording an out in IUP's six-run sixth inning. Hess pitched the first five innings and gave up four runs on six hits in the no-decision.
Dillon Boyer went 2-for-3 with an RBI, and
Luke Williams and
Nate Negri each had two hits for Pitt-Johnstown.
Jones had three hits and three RBI, and Sepic added two hits and three RBI for the Crimson Hawks.
In game two, IUP scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth to overcome a 7-6 deficit in the 10-8 win.
After falling behind 3-0 after one inning, the Mountain Cats battled back to take a 4-3 lead in the top of the fourth on
Ernesto Rizzitano's RBI ground out.
IUP scored three in the bottom of the frame, but
Jake Stern's two-run double in the Pitt-Johnstown seventh put the Mountain Cats back in front, 7-6.
However, the Crimson Hawks came right back with four more in the bottom of the sixth to secure the sweep.
Dylan Kerstetter had two hits and two RBI, and Stern drove in two for the Mountain Cats. Williams, Negri, and Sleigh also had two hits apiece.
With the sweep, IUP improved to 20-24 overall and evened its record in the PSAC West at 12-12.
The Mountain Cats travel to California University (PA) on Friday to begin a four-game conference series, before concluding the series against the Vulcans with Senior Day on Saturday at 4:30 p.m. at Point Stadium.
